Alonso Sounds Alarm on Aston Martin’s F1 Struggles: A Crucial Wake-Up Call
Fernando Alonso describes recent challenges faced by Aston Martin as "a significant reality check"
Fernando Alonso shares his thoughts on a couple of challenging events for Aston Martin.
Fernando Alonso has described the recent performances of Aston Martin in the last two Formula 1 races as a significant alert, indicating a drop in their competitive ranking.
Despite Aston Martin introducing major improvements to their vehicle, they have only managed to secure four points over the past three races.
Worryingly, Alonso has had a terrible time in his most recent two weekends.
He finished at the bottom in the Imola qualifiers and subsequently faced elimination in the first qualifying round in Monaco.
It seems that Aston Martin is experiencing a déjà vu, initially kicking off the season with strong performances only to later fall behind, much like last year.
The team based in Silverstone faces the danger of becoming the sixth quickest squad in Formula 1, considering the remarkable performance displayed by Red Bull Racing with Yuki Tsunoda behind the wheel.
Nonetheless, Alonso retains his optimism towards Aston Martin, believing that their recent struggles will enable them to "identify our shortcomings."
"Alonso mentioned to DAZN that the weekends were essential for identifying our shortcomings, getting to know the car better, and enhancing our performance. He highlighted that challenges teach us more than successes do, as the issues are often overshadowed by the joy of winning."
"Our team is gaining valuable insights and eagerly anticipating the upcoming years, 2025 and 2026. These recent competitions have served as a significant alert for us, and they will undoubtedly benefit our future efforts."
Alonso just fell short of securing a points position in Monaco.
On Sunday, his primary goal was to support his Aston Martin teammate, Lance Stroll, who was leading the way.
Alonso intentionally slowed down, enabling Stroll to pit without losing position and rejoin the race in an unobstructed part of the track.
Despite the efforts, Stroll's encounter with the barrier led to a puncture, rendering his attempts futile.
"Alonso remarked, 'We exhausted all our strategies in an attempt to earn some points. Knowing the challenge ahead, we opted for an additional pit stop for Lance to equip him with new tyres, aiming to overtake Gasly, but even that plan fell through. It seems luck was not on our side once more this weekend."
"The vehicle didn't perform adequately to secure any points. It's not like we let a major chance slip by, but when you opt for the hard tire, prolong your run, and then unexpectedly there's a red flag, forcing you to switch to medium tires for the remainder of the race, it's practically a death sentence since they need to endure for 78 laps.
"My aim was to ensure their endurance, though it resulted in a significantly slowed speed."
