Aleix Espargaro Joins Honda as 2025 MotoGP Test Rider: Insights and Expectations
Aleix Espargaro could assist in exploring new options, says Puig
Alberto Puig: 'We believe his experience with a different manufacturer can provide us with valuable insights into various possibilities.'
Since the rumors began following his retirement announcement in Catalunya, it has now been officially confirmed that Aleix Espargaro from Aprilia will join Honda as a MotoGP test rider in 2025.
Espargaro, set to collaborate with current HRC test rider Stefan Bradl, first entered the MotoGP scene in 2009 and has competed on bikes from Ducati, ART, Forward Yamaha, Suzuki, and Aprilia since then.
Espargaro, who developed his racing skills later than most, achieved his first podium finish in 2014. However, it wasn't until 2021 that he secured another. The Spanish rider then made history by claiming Aprilia's inaugural MotoGP win the next year, and to date, he has secured three MotoGP victories riding the RS-GP.
"Aleix chose to step away from racing, so naturally we considered him since he's still incredibly quick and brings a lot of experience," HRC team manager Alberto Puig mentioned to MotoGP.com when questioned about Espargaro's qualities as a test rider.
"He has competed for various manufacturers and, given his age, possesses significant experience and insight into MotoGP bikes."
"He’s undoubtedly quick and in good shape. We believe he will assist us in exploring various options, given his experience with a different manufacturer."
"However, it's also a fact that with the extensive testing programs we have today, having just one test rider like Stefan can place an enormous amount of work on a single individual."
“We considered it a great chance since he’s retiring. We've known Aleix for quite some time, and I’m confident he’ll be very helpful. I believe he’s quite pleased to become part of our team.”
Espargaro hinted at participating in at least one race next season as a wild-card entry, but Puig mentioned, "It's too soon to confirm, but it might happen."
Under the new concessions system implemented this year, Honda and Yamaha are granted additional testing chances and wild-card entries until they move beyond the lowest D ranking.
