Ionna Sparks EV Revolution: Transforms Old Gas Station into State-of-the-Art ‘Rechargery

Ionna commenced construction on Thursday for its premier electric vehicle rapid-charging facility, which notably will be situated on a site that formerly housed a gas station.

The first-ever site in Apex, North Carolina, will feature a historical gas station from the town, set to be rejuvenated and integrated into the newly announced "Rechargery," as per the details in a press statement. This location will boast 10 sheltered parking spots that are compatible with Combined Charging Standard (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) plugs, offering up to 400 kw in charging capacity, the statement reported.

The location will feature comforts like a lounge area for drivers offering snacks and drinks, restroom facilities, and wireless internet, along with outdoor spaces that are welcoming to pets, as per Ionna's statement. Rove, an emerging company, is embracing a similar model with sheltered parking and facilities, aiming to establish 20 well-equipped charging locations throughout California. Furthermore, Electrify America has launched an indoor electric vehicle charging hub, which they believe will serve as a model for subsequent city-based charging stations.

In 2023, Ionna emerged as a prospective competitor to Tesla's Supercharger system. Supported by seven car manufacturers, with contributions from companies such as BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, the details of which remain confidential. Ionna's objective is to deploy at least 30,000 high-capacity electric vehicle rapid charging stations across North America. The aim is to support extended travel by ensuring these stations are conveniently placed, with plans to finish the entire network by the end of the decade.

Ionna has announced that its system will enable smooth coordination with the charging applications of cooperating car manufacturers. This will permit users to book, pay, plan their routes, and find directions to its charging stations. Additionally, it will offer clear energy management and various other functions.

Some leading car manufacturers have opted out of the Ionna initiative. Instead, General Motors is collaborating with EVgo to set up 400 high-speed charging stations across major American cities, with plans to start in 2025. These stations will include protective coverings and surveillance systems, yet GM has not provided information on additional features similar to those proposed by Ionna.
