2025 Nissan Leaf Continues Without Changes But Loses Federal EV Tax Credit
The 2025 model of the Nissan Leaf will continue unchanged, however, it will no longer qualify for the federal electric vehicle tax credit.
The fluctuating status of the Leaf's qualification commenced with the introduction of updated rules last August. In October, the 2024 model of the Leaf qualified for a $3,750 discount. However, as the new year dawned, the Leaf once again lost its qualified status until it complied with the Inflation Reduction Act's (IRA) stipulation on "battery content," although it did not fulfill the "battery materials" criteria. Despite this, Nissan announced in March that the 2024 version continued to be eligible for the $3,750 incentive, though this doesn't seem to extend to the 2025 model.
Upcoming Model of Nissan Leaf
The 2025 edition of the Leaf comes in two versions: the 40-kWh S and the 60-kWh SV Plus, offering 149 and 212 miles on a single charge each. The starting price for the base model, the Leaf S, is set at $29,180, while the higher-end SV Plus begins at $37,330, delivery included. This reflects a slight adjustment from the previous year's pricing, which was $29,235 for the S and $37,285 for the SV Plus.
Every version of the Leaf operates with front-wheel drive. However, the Leaf S variant is calibrated to deliver 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, in contrast to the SV Plus model which offers an increased performance of 214 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.
Nissan North America's spokesperson, Jeff Wandell, informed Green Car Reports that the company is committed to collaborating with its supply chain partners to ensure the 2025 Leaf model qualifies for the 30D Tax Credit moving forward. The manufacturer of the Leaf's batteries continues to be AESC, and they have a long-standing operation of putting together Leaf battery packs near the electric vehicle's production facility in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Upcoming Nissan Leaf Model for
Nissan's Leaf has not seen a major refresh for some time. It continues to stand out as the sole new electric vehicle that offers CHAdeMO rapid-charging technology. The most recent significant update to the Leaf came in 2023 with alterations to the battery composition. This allowed Nissan to reduce the capacity of the Plus battery to 60 kilowatt-hours from 62, while simultaneously improving the car's efficiency. The last major overhaul of the Leaf's design occurred in 2018.
It's possible that this will be the final production year for the current version of the Leaf in the United States. The model has already been discontinued in the United Kingdom and Europe. Meanwhile, Nissan is preparing to release a new version of the Leaf with a design that leans more towards a crossover, which is expected to hit the market in 2027.
