The 2024 VW Golf: A Look at the Entry-Level Manual Model

Included in the price of €28,330 are also steel wheels

The Volkswagen Group is currently facing a tough period, particularly as the Volkswagen brand isn't making enough profit on each car sold. It's surprising given that the starting model of the Golf, which is displayed here, now has a hefty price tag of €28,330 in Germany. The car now comes with a 1.5 TSI engine delivering 116 horsepower, a step up from the previous 1.0 TSI with 90 horsepower. However, when the Golf 8 was introduced in 2019, it was available for €19,990.

Significant price hike

Volkswagen's base model has seen an increase of over 8,000 euros in just five years. VW may justify this with reasons such as inflation, enhanced features, an additional 26 horsepower, and the recent facelift of the Golf model. Let's take a closer look at the standard Golf in the German configurator, where, just like in 2019, "Uranograu" remains the no-extra-cost color option.

What comes standard? A variety of assistance systems, mandated by the EU. Noteworthy are the 15-inch steel wheels, with 16-inch alloys being a 1,030 euros upgrade. Oddly enough, the car comes with an installed seat heater, but it requires activation. This feature is included in the winter package, which also offers a heated steering wheel, for an additional 640 euros.

Standard features include a digital dashboard and a touchscreen with wireless connectivity to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring navigation capability. There are no additional infotainment choices for the standard model, simply referred to as "Golf". However, it does come with single-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights and taillights, and a keyless start system as standard equipment.

Oh my, look at that gearshift!

Do you notice anything unique? Indeed, it features a stick shift, meaning it's a manual transmission, this one with six speeds. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, with a top speed of 203 km/h. You can even opt for a more upscale Golf with a manual transmission if you select a higher trim level, all the way up to the R-Line.

The most budget-friendly Golf available in Europe is satisfied with a modest 116 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine. Notably, Volkswagen has removed the small 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine from its lineup with the recent facelift. Additionally, a few months ago with the latest update, the manufacturer discontinued the GTD model, which was essentially a GTI equipped with a diesel engine.

Will the Golf 8 remain on the market for years to come?

If you're interested in the station wagon version, the Golf Variant, its starting price in Germany is 29,430 Euros. These are rather steep initial costs, especially considering that Fiat currently has a well-equipped Tipo with a 130 horsepower diesel engine on offer for just over 18,000 Euros. For the price of an entry-level Golf, Dacia provides a fully equipped new Duster with a 140 horsepower hybrid engine, and that's not even touching on what MG has to offer.

Volkswagen is expected to launch the all-electric Golf 9, possibly dubbed ID. Golf, before the decade concludes. This will result in the simultaneous sale of two different Golf generations for a number of years. Upon its release, the new electric vehicle is likely to overshadow the ID.3, which ironically was introduced in 2019 to replace the e-Golf.
