The upcoming BMW X3 (2024) is set to introduce its fourth generation
Our first experience sitting in the vehicle along with details on size and engine options. Expect a six-cylinder diesel engine by summer 2025
The name seems fitting: With approximately 10,600 new registrations from January to May 2024, the X3 has become Germany's third most popular BMW model. This is particularly impressive given that the current G01 series has been available since 2017. However, a completely new fourth-generation SUV is on the horizon, and we've had the opportunity to take an early look.
An insider scoop: BMW will discontinue the all-electric iX3 model, passing the baton to the production version of the concept Neue Klasse X. Therefore, the G45, the internal designation for the new X3, is likely to be one of the final solely combustion engine innovations from the company.

Exterior
Upon initial encounter with the fourth iteration of the X3, the notably sparse rear end stands out, featuring a generous amount of metal and the T-shaped taillights characteristic of the X series. From a side view, the X3 maintains its most familiar appearance.
The latest BMW X3 model has seen an increase in size compared to its predecessor, growing 34 millimeters in length to reach 4,755 millimeters and expanding 29 millimeters in width to measure 1,920 millimeters. Conversely, the height has been decreased by 25 millimeters, settling at 1,660 millimeters. Below is a summary of all the dimensions:
The bold and imposing grille on the upright front facade of the latest BMW X3 exudes a confident aura. Its interior boasts a novel design featuring a mix of vertical and diagonal bars, adding a unique touch that we liken to the Aldi Süd logo already seen on the new 1 Series. Additionally, there's an option to illuminate the grille's surrounds for an enhanced appearance.
The daytime running lights, parking lights, and turn signals of the LED headlights are now produced by overlapping L-shaped light sources. Additionally, adaptive LED headlights with anti-glare matrix high beam, urban and cornering lights, as well as blue design accents, are available as optional features, alongside the M lights Shadow Line.
Every model of the BMW X3 M50 xDrive, with the exception of one, boasts exhaust pipes seamlessly embedded into the rear bumper. When it comes to color choices for the latest X3, there's one solid and eight metallic options, including the newly introduced shade called Dune Grey metallic.
The standard features of the latest BMW X3 include alloy wheels measuring 18 inches, with the BMW X3 30e xDrive model sporting 19-inch wheels. Buyers also have the option to upgrade to larger alloy wheels, with sizes of 20 inches and 21 inches available directly from the manufacturer.

The available M Sport package adds a more dynamic flair, featuring 19-inch M light-alloy wheels and distinct design elements aimed at enhancing air flow and aerodynamic equilibrium. The M Sport package Pro builds on these features, including the Iconic Glow contour lighting and an M Sport braking system with red-painted calipers.
Interior
Stepping inside the latest BMW X3, one can't help but notice the resemblance to the new 5 series. What stands out? A large "Curved Display" matched with a rotary push controller. A design now characteristic of BMW includes colorful light accents on the center console and door panels. At the front of both the driver and passenger doors, these fresh design elements encompass function buttons, ventilation controls, air vents, and door handles.
There's ample space throughout the vehicle, which is to be expected given the size of the X3 model. In the back seat, there's plenty of legroom to spare in front of the knees. The boot capacity can be increased from 570 to a maximum of 1,700 liters (for the BMW X3 30e xDrive: 460 – 1,600 liters). An optional feature is a tow hitch that can be extended and retracted electrically. Depending on the specific model, the maximum towing capacity can reach up to 2,500 kilograms. For those interested in transporting bicycles, it's worth noting that both the roof and the support can bear loads of up to 100 kilograms each.
The latest BMW X3 comes standard with freshly designed, electrically adjustable and heated sport seats. These seats, presented in the Econeer style, feature surfaces and cushioning made from recycled materials.
Connectivity
The latest version of the BMW iDrive system, featuring QuickSelect, is available in the new X3 for an intuitive and easy-to-use experience. It introduces a new home screen where function icons are vertically aligned at the same level, allowing for direct access to features without the need to navigate through a submenu.

The latest iDrive is designed with a focus on touch and voice commands. It operates on the BMW Operating System 9, which also facilitates a customizable range of additional digital services.
BMW's Digital Premium subscription service offers access to a variety of country-specific apps within the vehicle. This includes a range of music and video streaming services. Additionally, every model comes with built-in smartphone integration compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Drivetrains
As is common with new vehicles, the plug-in hybrid features a significantly increased electric range.
The propulsion system of the BMW X3 30e xDrive merges a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor that's built into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Together, they produce a combined power output reaching up to 220 kW (299 hp). On a full charge, it can travel between 81 to 90 kilometers according to WLTP standards. It comes equipped with a standard AC charging capability of 11 kW.
The flagship model of the series, the new X3 M50 xDrive, is powered by the most potent straight-six petrol engine ever used in an M Performance vehicle. The 3.0-liter engine is paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Its maximum output of 293 kW (398 hp) is delivered to the road via an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and all-wheel drive. The BMW X3 M50 xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The standard equipment includes an M sport suspension with variable sport steering, an M sport braking system, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, and an M sport differential integrated into the rear-axle transmission. There is also an optional adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers available. M-specific design elements like the M kidney grille with horizontal bars and the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, as well as the four tailpipes of the exhaust system, emphasize the BMW M automobile's position as the most powerful model variation of the new BMW X3.
The latest versions of the new BMW X3 also benefit from the integration of 48-volt mild hybrid technology, enhancing the vehicle's efficiency. Equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, the new BMW X3 20 xDrive delivers a maximum output of 153 kW (208 hp), allowing it to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. Similar to the new 1 Series, the X3's petrol models no longer include the letter 'i' in their naming convention.
2024 BMW X3 30e with All-Wheel Drive
The new X3 20d xDrive features a 2.0 liter four-cylinder diesel engine that delivers a maximum output of 145 kW (197 hp). This diesel variant can go from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds. By the summer of 2025, the range of engines available for the new BMW X3 will include an inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Below is a summary of all the engines initially on offer:
All models come standard with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, which includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The two-joint spring strut front axle and the five-link rear axle have been modified for improved kinematics and elastokinematics, aiming to enhance steering precision. Additionally, wheel-slip limitation close to the actuator and the integrated braking system are part of the standard suspension technology. The benefits of these features will be revealed in an initial driving report at a future date.
Prices
BMW underscores the enhanced standard features of the new X3, including additional driver assistance systems. These standard amenities comprise a tri-zone automatic climate control, noise-reducing acoustic glass, keyless entry, a power-operated tailgate, power-folding side mirrors, an alarm system, and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus with the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system.
The X3 comes standard with ambient lighting that includes welcome and farewell features, a storage compartment with wireless charging capability for compatible smartphones, a Bluetooth interface, four USB-C ports, and a 12-volt outlet on both the center console and in the luggage compartment.
Available features include a solid panoramic glass roof providing an expansive, unobstructed view, heated steering wheel, rear privacy glass, and a parking heater.
