Mazda’s Power Play: New 2.5-Liter Engine Boosts 2025 Mazda 3 and CX-30 Models
The Mazda 3 and CX-30 models are set to receive a new 2.5-liter gasoline engine by 2025, which will serve as the new entry-level powertrain. This engine will replace the existing two 2.0-liter engines and will come alongside a model update. Just a few days ago, we discussed Mazda's decision to discontinue the 2.0-liter engine in the MX-5 Roadster. Now, another two-liter engine is being phased out, this time in the Mazda 3 and CX-30. However, the change may not cause much concern as the new engine offers greater displacement and torque than its predecessors.
Mazda refers to this concept as "Rightsizing." This approach was well-received with the introduction of the 3.3-liter inline-six diesel engine in the larger CX-60 last year, which, contrary to skepticism, has proven to be quite fuel-efficient.
So now we have the latest e-Skyactiv G140 on the scene. Picture this: a four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 2.5 liters as the introductory power unit for compact cars – that's something to savor. This new G 140, equipped with Mazda's M Hybrid system, is taking over from the previous gasoline engines that offered 122 and 150 horsepower. Now, 140 horsepower from a 2.5-liter engine may not break any records, but the Japanese manufacturers are boasting about the torque, which is at 238 Nm – that's a notable increase of 25 Nm from before.

According to the manufacturer, the new engine delivers "significantly more torque in the lower and middle rev ranges, which are crucial for everyday driving." The peak torque now kicks in at 3,300 RPM, which is 700 revolutions sooner than before. This is expected to enhance drivability, acceleration, and actual fuel consumption.
The cylinder deactivation feature is also expected to reduce fuel consumption by turning off combustion in cylinders one and four through a variable intake valve control when the engine is under low load. Power is transmitted through either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission, depending on the driver's preference.
For the 2025 model year, the Mazda 3 and CX-30 will receive additional updates. Voice control via Alexa will now be a standard feature of the infotainment system, allowing access to functions such as music apps, weather updates, news, Amazon shopping, and smart home device management. Also standard will be the new hybrid navigation system, which includes online map updates and real-time traffic information.
The latest e-Skyactiv G 140 engine option is now available for both body styles of the Mazda 3 as well as for the Mazda CX-30. Pricing for the Mazda 3 with this engine begins at €28,140 for the Prime-Line trim, with the hatchback version costing an additional €500. For the CX-30 equipped with the new powertrain, the starting price is set at €28,940. The fuel consumption rates for these models are reported by the manufacturer to be between 5.8 and 6.0 liters.
