Team Orders Dilemma: Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Prioritize Lando Norris as F1 Championship Heats Up
Toto Wolff: McLaren should prioritize Lando Norris through team orders
Mercedes chief shares his opinion on the McLaren team orders discussion
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has hinted that McLaren may need to make a tough decision regarding team orders as the F1 championship battle nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Max Verstappen's disappointing weekend at the Italian Grand Prix by securing the top two spots on the starting grid. However, Lando Norris, who had clinched pole position, dropped from first to third place on the opening lap following a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a bold maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane. Following this, Norris surrendered another spot to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured the third position, trailing Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed to finish only sixth.
Toto Wolff commented on the challenging position a leading racing team finds itself in, stating, "When you're suddenly competing at the front, it's a tough situation. On one hand, their drivers are racers just like ours." This was his response when questioned about his reaction to McLaren permitting their drivers to compete against each other.
"We aim to ensure the most deserving person succeeds, but if the situation turns chaotic and negatively affects the team's performance, how should we respond to that?"
"The team consistently faces defeat because imposing fixed positions and team orders might conflict with our racing spirit, but ultimately, logic must take precedence."
"In the end, you don't want to miss out on winning a championship by just a few points that were within your reach. Balancing this is extremely challenging, and there's no single right way to manage it."
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team principal Andrea Stella might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift from his "racer's soul" methodology.
Toto Wolff stated that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of the sport. He mentioned that Andrea, in particular, has witnessed numerous events unfold firsthand during his time at Ferrari.
"He possesses the spirit of a true racer, one who prefers to let the competition unfold naturally. However, I believe they will reach a decision on how to manage the situation after this race… what steps are we taking?"
"This marked the beginning of our introduction of engagement guidelines, subsequently altering the terminology to 'racing intent' as the word 'rules' seemed too stern for the drivers."
