Taiwan Opposition Leader Ko Wen-je Under Investigation: Home Raided in Corruption Probe Linked to Taipei Mall Development
Authorities Raid Home of Prominent Taiwanese Opposition Leader Ko Wen-je Amid Corruption Investigation
Ko Wen-je, head of the Taiwan People’s Party and former Taipei mayor, is being investigated for his involvement in the approval of a shopping mall project.
On Friday, authorities in Taiwan searched the residence of prominent opposition leader Ko Wen-je amid allegations of corruption linked to his tenure as the mayor of Taipei.
Ko, who heads Taiwan's third-largest political group, the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), and was a contender against the island’s leader William Lai Ching-te in the January election, faced questioning by officials from the Agency Against Corruption, local news outlets reported. His wife, Chen Pei-chi, was also called in to provide testimony as a witness.
Authorities are examining the involvement of Ko in the authorization of the Core Pacific City project, a large commercial center in Taipei, during his tenure as the mayor of the city.
This week, authorities arrested three individuals linked to an ongoing investigation: Taipei city council member Ying Hsiao-wei, her aide Wu Shun-min, and Sheen Ching-jing, the head of Core Pacific Group. Ying is affiliated with the Kuomintang, the primary opposition party.
Ko's TPP is increasingly perceived as a burgeoning political movement in Taiwan, garnering backing from constituents disillusioned by the KMT's pro-Beijing stance, yet also critical of the governing Democratic Progressive Party's aggressive stance on cross-strait interactions.
