Rosberg Critiques McLaren’s Team Orders: ‘Hurting Lando Norris’ Amidst Piastri Scraps
Nico Rosberg weighs in on the McLaren team orders controversy
Nico Rosberg evaluates the rivalry between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
Nico Rosberg claims that McLaren's choice to allow their drivers to compete freely is "damaging" Lando Norris.
However, he emphasized that the victory of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the F1 Italian Grand Prix was not solely due to the choices made by McLaren’s leadership.
Norris began the race in the lead but was quickly passed by his teammate Oscar Piastri during the initial lap, which set him at a disadvantage. He struggled to regain his position and eventually failed to make a significant impact on Max Verstappen in the drivers’ championship.
Former Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg discussed McLaren's strategy of treating both drivers equally in an analysis for Sky Sports.
“Papaya sets the standard for competition, but always compete with integrity,” stated Rosberg.
Sources indicate that Lando believed Oscar exceeded acceptable boundaries during their contest at Turn 4. He felt the maneuver was not entirely fair or within the rules.
"Intense debates are expected in the McLaren team’s motorhome."
"It's quite challenging to handle. It's a delicate balance. You can put those guidelines in writing, but did Oscar actually exceed the boundaries set by the Papaya rules?"
“I believe Oscar performed excellently. He vacated the area and executed his task superbly.”
Andrea Stella, who is now the team principal for McLaren, was employed by Ferrari during the time when Michael Schumacher held the clear position of the top driver.
However, Rosberg asserts that he did not influence McLaren's intriguing approach of giving equal treatment to both drivers.
“This philosophy originates from the highest level. It is instilled by Zak Brown,” he stated.
"We have two top drivers, which is a fundamental aspect of McLaren's philosophy that dates back many years. Andrea is putting that strategy into action."
"They believed they had a chance at victory right up until the final moments."
"The team allowed their drivers to compete against each other, creating an entertaining and thrilling atmosphere. Eventually, Ferrari took a gamble with their tactics, which ultimately outsmarted the others."
“There’s an issue concerning Lando and the drivers' championship. The team has chosen to continue with both drivers holding equal status, without giving Lando any special preference. That’s their decision, but it’s certainly impacting Lando negatively.”
Are McLaren cautious when it comes to taking risks?
Norris trails Verstappen by 62 points, even though Verstappen tops the drivers' standings despite experiencing a slump in performance.
Karun Chandhok mentioned that to compete for the drivers' championship, it's crucial to ensure Lando gets all the points.
"On the other hand, allowing them to compete has been beneficial for Oscar. His performance was outstanding, and he was the quickest McLaren driver today."
"In the long run, it is more advantageous to have Oscar as an ally."
Rosberg commented, “Lando is performing exceptionally. He’s driving impressively and his confidence is soaring.”
“It’s inspiring that he senses an opportunity. He remains the less favored contender.”
"Lando made an error at Turn 4. Positioned on the inside, he had the upper hand but opted to play it too safe."
Is McLaren overly cautious when it comes to taking chances?
In response, Rosberg said, "It's hard to determine if they were too cautious. They were taken by surprise today. No one could have foreseen that Ferrari's strategy would succeed. Based on today's events, I wouldn't make that claim."
"Risk averse? They allowed their drivers to engage in fierce competition! They raced side by side, and Lando nearly lost control while dueling with Oscar."
Rosberg emphasized that the McLarens' duel on the first lap did not prevent them from winning the race.
"Not exactly. Oscar had an outstanding performance in the race. They maximized the potential of the car today," he commented.
