Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Team Effort to Solve Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's announcement this week.
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties.
Fernando Alonso maintains that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin may reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which time he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have subsided.
At Monza, Alonso remarked, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues."
“It’s about assessing our current situation and output. We need to recognize what’s working well and what’s not, in order to better prepare for 2025.”
Next year, Newey could be free to manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso extending to the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso ended up in 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they make a serious push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, like this one for me, I anticipate it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend was one of those instances where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps even beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to stay patient and recognize that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and currently far ahead of us."
"We find ourselves trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, so it's clear we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe there's still time for us to make adjustments."
"Over a span of four months, McLaren advanced from being in the last position to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. During the initial four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they’ve already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't buy into making excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will see any advancements in performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance fell short in Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"We're unlikely to see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. So, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
