Robert Kubica's transition to DTM has been officially announced as he makes his comeback to BMW with the customer team ART Grand Prix for the 2020 season.
The Polish racer has a deep connection with the German automaker, having entered the world of Formula 1 with the BMW Sauber team. At 35 years old, he spent four seasons racing for BMW's official F1 team, achieving a notable milestone by winning the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, which stands as the team's sole F1 triumph.
It has been officially announced that Robert Kubica will join the DTM, returning to BMW with the customer team ART Grand Prix for the 2020 season.
The Polish racer has a close association with the German carmaker, as he started his Formula 1 career with the BMW Sauber team. Now 35 years old, he raced for BMW's official F1 team for four seasons, achieving their sole Formula 1 win at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.
After coming back to Formula 1 following a severe rallying accident in 2011 that nearly ended his career in single-seater racing, Robert Kubica served as a test driver for both Renault and Williams. He later earned a full-time racing position with Williams in 2019. In 2020, Kubica has been designated as the reserve driver for Alfa Romeo and will also embark on his first DTM season, balancing his responsibilities between the two roles.
Kubica first tried out a DTM car during the young driver test in Jerez last December.
"The DTM has been of interest to me for quite some time," said Kubica. "The test in Jerez last December truly whetted my appetite for more. I think the DTM is among the most competitive and top-tier racing series globally."
"Clearly, we need to build up more experience to match the seasoned DTM teams, but we'll put in the effort to constantly get better. I'm really excited to begin."
BMW motorsport chief Jens Marquardt expressed his excitement, stating, "This is fantastic news for the DTM. Our aim has consistently been to expand the DTM grid with a privately-operated BMW M4 DTM. Following extensive conversations, we decided that the package from ART Grand Prix was the best choice."
"During the test last December, Robert demonstrated his exceptional skill in a DTM car. He will be a significant advantage for the series."
The 2020 DTM season, which consists of 10 rounds, will commence at Zolder from April 24 to April 26
