Red Bull’s Plan to Boost Sergio Perez: Easier Car, Renewed Confidence
Red Bull suggests strategy to support Sergio Perez comeback
"The harder the car is to handle, the more pronounced the gap to Max becomes"
Red Bull has suggested that making the car easier for Sergio Perez to handle is the key to his recent resurgence.
During the F1 summer break, Perez received significant support as Red Bull confirmed they would continue backing him, despite increasing calls for a midseason driver switch.
Since securing a new contract earlier this year, Perez's performance has been dismal, yet he has managed to retain his position as Max Verstappen’s teammate.
Helmut Marko from Red Bull expressed to ESPN that they are confident in their ability to improve the situation and provide more stability for him.
"Being Max's teammate in Formula One is quite challenging. Checo deserves credit; he's secured race victories."
"Our conversation wasn't solely focused on drivers; it was part of our usual talks about how we could enhance the circumstances."
"We need to work on making the car easier to drive."
The harder it is to handle the car, the more Max's exceptional skills become evident.
"If the back end of the car slides, he won't ease off the accelerator. He might just say it's a bit unstable. Checo might describe it as challenging or even impossible to drive."
"Being alongside Max is a unique experience. Therefore, we decided to make the car easier to handle and improve its balance, which aligns with Max's preferences as well. The ideal scenario is to continue working with Checo and hope that he…"
"The frequent fluctuations were the primary issue."
"One day, he delivered outstanding results and performances, but the following day he trailed Max by about half a second."
Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson were clear front-runners who were overlooked as potential substitutes for Perez.
Marko previously stated that Perez "totally fell apart" during the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, where he began in the front row but ended up in eighth place.
That outcome could have signified his last Formula 1 race with the team, but they have shown considerable patience.
Perez is set to drive the Red Bull car when the Formula 1 season continues at Zandvoort, aiming to recapture the impressive performance he showed early in the season, where he secured podium finishes in four out of the first five races.
