**”Inside the Deal: How Williams’ Transparency and Vision Lured Carlos Sainz from Ferrari”**
Williams discusses the allure of sensitive car data for Carlos Sainz.
James Vowles reveals the strategies he used to persuade Carlos Sainz.
Williams detailed how they persuaded Carlos Sainz to join their team by revealing confidential details about their vehicle.
The choice of Sainz, a departing Ferrari driver and grand prix victor, to sign an extended contract with Williams represents a significant achievement for the British racing team.
Talks that started in Abu Dhabi the previous year developed into candid conversations about Williams' development and the 'sacrifices' that Sainz would need to agree to.
During an interview on the F1 Nation podcast, team principal James Vowles shared, "I provided him with precise details regarding the car's weight excess. This information allows him to estimate the car's potential performance had it met the weight requirements."
"Globally, it implied that we would have earned points in every race, especially in the early part of the year."
"That hurts me, but it also indicates that the car's performance has improved."
"Reducing weight is achievable, and we are actively doing it. However, enhancing actual aerodynamic efficiency is much more challenging."
"Weight is simply a factor; I've adjusted it countless times in my career. Adding three kilograms translates to roughly three-tenths. Removing three kilograms also corresponds to about three-tenths. He understands this and can observe the difference."
"He compiled an analysis of current performance levels, giving him a better understanding of the situation. This was motivating."
"I pointed out to him where we are making future investments with a streamlined approach, but I couldn't provide detailed information."
“He was aware of everyone we are bringing on board. There are additional signings we haven’t made public yet.”
"I explained to him the reasons behind our changes, the time it will require, and how 2024 represents a middle ground. 2025 is also a concession, which was tough for him to accept given his competitive nature and unwillingness to lag behind."
“But this is the reason 2026 is thrilling…”
In 2025, Sainz is set to take over from Logan Sargeant and will team up with Alex Albon to create an intriguing partnership
"Leave politics aside; our team stands out"
Vowles shared details on how he communicated to his team of 1,000 employees about the significant achievement of securing Sainz, beating out competitors Sauber and Alpine.
"We installed a projector screen and connected it to a TV," Vowles explained. "When I entered, the Netflix team was with me. There were around 600 to 700 people present."
"I suggested that it would be better to keep your eyes on the screen. I've enjoyed the thrill of securing victories and titles."
"I assure you, the response to this was the most heartfelt I've ever witnessed in my time in Formula 1. It was truly remarkable."
"The yelling, the shrieking…"
Carlos recorded a 90-second video segment. Unfortunately, they failed to capture the first 60 seconds due to continuous screaming in the background.
“That single moment revealed the significance it held for those people. I then took the initiative to engage with others to understand their perspectives further.”
"This is a definitive declaration of our goals. We're allocating resources appropriately. We possess one of the strongest, if not the strongest, driver teams in the field."
"There isn’t any political aspect involved. Both of them are simply engineered for high performance."
Vowles stated: "The second implication for the team is the most significant aspect."
From the very beginning, I recognized that Carlos is fast. However, he is also highly focused on performance. He requires numerous details to be perfect in order to deliver his best and contribute effectively to the team. His goal is to enhance the team's overall performance.
"It’s not by chance that each team he’s worked with has gotten better following his time there. After spending several months in conversation with him, I understand the reasons why."
The factory determined that they also needed to improve their performance.
"It’s not acceptable to end up without a floor. We require three floors that meet the necessary standards. Everything must be prepared ahead of time, and the performance needs to be on par with the capabilities of our drivers."
