Rast’s Remarkable Resurgence: Audi Driver Reflects on Near-Miraculous Comeback in 2018 DTM Season
Rast Expresses Pride in Comeback After Remarkable Year
Rene Rast has expressed his pride in both himself and Audi for nearly clinching the defense of his 2017 DTM title, falling short by just four points after an outstanding performance in the latter half of the season.
At the beginning of the year, Rast and Audi seemed to be out of contention for the 2018 championship. Nine races into the season, the Team Rosberg driver was trailing by 104 points.
Rene Rast expressed his pride in both himself and Audi after narrowly missing out on retaining his 2017 DTM title by just four points, following a remarkable performance in the latter half of the season.
Earlier in the year, it seemed like Rast and Audi were out of the running for the 2018 title. After nine races, the Team Rosberg driver was trailing by 104 points from the top of the championship standings.
After clinching his initial victory of the season in the second race at Zandvoort, Rast experienced an exceptional streak of performances, culminating in the reigning champion only missing the podium twice in the latter half of 2018.
In the end, that series of races led to Rast setting a new DTM record as the 31-year-old clinched six consecutive wins, including two triumphs at this weekend's Hockenheim finale.
Amazingly, this advanced him past Paul di Resta of Mercedes to second place in the drivers' standings, leaving him only four points behind the ultimate winner, Gary Paffett.
Rast expressed his amazement at the year's achievements, calling it an incredible comeback. He conveyed his pride in Audi Sport, Team Rosberg, and himself.
The beginning of the season was challenging for us, but we remained persistent, continuously enhancing the car and refining our strategies. The Audi drivers collaborated exceptionally well as a team.
"Maintaining the title hopes until the very end required such efforts. In the end, it fell just short. While it's somewhat disappointing, Gary Paffett and Mercedes-Benz earned their victory. They were consistently strong all year.”
