Mercedes Unveils Aggressive Double Upgrade Plan Ahead of F1 Summer Break with Wins in Sight
"Stay tuned for more" – Mercedes announces a two-stage upgrade plan ahead of F1 summer break
Mercedes is set to introduce additional enhancements to the W15 during the upcoming races in Budapest and Spa.
Mercedes has announced that they will introduce additional enhancements to their 2024 Formula 1 car, which has already secured race victories, during the final two races before the summer break in August.
Following a rough beginning to the season, Mercedes has secured consecutive victories. George Russell delivered the team's first triumph since 2022 at the Austrian Grand Prix, and Lewis Hamilton broke a two-and-a-half-year dry spell with a win at the British Grand Prix last weekend.
Mercedes has been steadily enhancing their W15 car as part of an intensive development effort in recent weeks. Team principal Toto Wolff has announced that additional upgrades will be introduced at the forthcoming Hungarian and Belgian Grand Prix events.
Wolff mentioned at Silverstone that they have additional performance improvements on the way, with updates planned for Budapest and Spa.
"We need to stay grounded; last week's victory was due to the incident between Verstappen and Norris, but today's triumph is entirely ours."
"We truly had the speed, as demonstrated by George and Lewis leading… we were consistently competitive in nearly every situation."
Wolff mentioned that Mercedes has been motivated by the positive results of their latest advancements, after resolving initial correlation problems that troubled them earlier in the year.
Reflecting on their journey, he explained, "Just five races back, we weren't even in the running for a podium finish, marking what seemed like a third consecutive year without results. Then, everything fell into place."
"All of a sudden, everything that was once confusing became clear. Our development strategies are yielding results reminiscent of earlier times. We're enhancing performance, applying it to the car, and it's showing in faster lap times."
"In the past two years, we were unable to provide the drivers with a car capable of winning races."
"It's almost like a fairytale: Lewis winning the British Grand Prix again in his final race for Mercedes. We couldn't have planned it any better."
"We explained that our actions are appropriate for the current situation.”
When questioned about whether Mercedes is making a comeback, Wolff responded affirmatively, stating, "It certainly seems that way. Last weekend, we were quite distant from the front, considering the gap we had before the crash. It was almost two-tenths of a second per lap, or slightly more."
"This is the nearest we've come in a long while on a circuit we haven't favored historically. It suggests that things might be improving significantly."
"We honestly didn't anticipate that it would be Silverstone, as we were adding more components to the car, we were actually expecting it to be either Budapest or Spa. However, I concur with George; our actions at this moment are justified."
