Mercedes Gears Up for Victory: Double Upgrade Plan Unveiled Ahead of F1 Summer Break
'Further enhancements ahead' – Mercedes announces a two-stage upgrade strategy before the F1 mid-season hiatus. The team plans to introduce additional improvements to the W15 for the forthcoming races in Budapest and Spa.
Mercedes has announced plans to introduce additional enhancements to their victorious 2024 Formula 1 vehicle during the two final races leading up to the August summer hiatus.
Following an underwhelming beginning to the season, Mercedes has bounced back by securing consecutive victories, with George Russell achieving the squad's first win since 2022 in Austria. This was followed by Lewis Hamilton breaking a two-and-a-half-year streak without a win at the recent British Grand Prix.
Mercedes has been progressively enhancing their W15 contender through a vigorous development effort in the past few weeks, and team principal Toto Wolff has announced that additional upgrades are planned for the forthcoming Hungarian and Belgian Grand Prix races.
"Wolff revealed at Silverstone that further enhancements in performance are on the horizon, with updates planned for Budapest and Spa."
It's important not to get too excited; our victory last week came as a direct result of [Verstappen and Norris] colliding, but this time, our win is genuine.
"Our speed was genuinely competitive, with George and Lewis consistently at the front… we managed to maintain our position in nearly every scenario."
Wolff mentioned that Mercedes has found motivation from the positive outcomes of their latest advancements, having resolved initial challenges with correlation that troubled them earlier in the year.
"He explained, "Reflecting on the fact that just five races earlier, we hadn't been in the running for a podium finish, marking what seemed like our third consecutive year of underperforming, everything suddenly fell into place."
All at once, what was once confusing became clear. The outcomes of our developmental efforts have returned to their former glory. We're discovering performance improvements, incorporating them into the vehicle, and seeing tangible reductions in lap times.
Over the previous two years, that situation did not occur. The drivers were not provided with a vehicle that would allow them to compete for wins.
"Seeing Lewis triumph at the British Grand Prix once more in what is his final appearance with Mercedes here feels akin to a small fairytale come true. It's as if we couldn't have written a better script ourselves."
"We rationalized that our actions were appropriate given the circumstances."
In response to whether Mercedes has made a comeback, Wolff answered affirmatively, noting that it certainly seems so, especially considering their previous performance. He highlighted that just the weekend before, they were significantly behind, pointing out the almost two-tenths of a second per lap difference prior to the crash.
"This marks the nearest we've come in quite a while on a circuit that wasn't particularly to our liking before. It somewhat suggested to us that things might be improving significantly.
"Frankly, we were surprised it happened at Silverstone. Given the adjustments we were making to the car, our sights were set more on Budapest or Spa. However, I'm with George on this – it validates that our current strategy is on the right track."
