Mercedes Decides Against Sainz as Hamilton’s Successor, Eyes Prodigy Antonelli for 2025
Mercedes delivers disappointing update to Carlos Sainz, concentrating on finding a successor for Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes and Carlos Sainz engaged in important discussions at Imola
Reports suggest that Mercedes has informed Carlos Sainz he will not be stepping in as Lewis Hamilton's successor.
Hamilton switching to Ferrari in 2025 has created a highly sought-after position in the F1 lineup, with Sainz being a clear contender.
Sainz, from Ferrari, has seen his opportunity taken by Hamilton and has consequently been in discussions with multiple teams, Mercedes among them.
Gazzetta reported that Mercedes communicated to Sainz during the Imola race, two weeks prior, their decision not to extend an offer to him as a replacement for Hamilton.
The publication from Italy is adamant that Mercedes has plans to place Andrea Kimi Antonelli behind the wheel of their vehicle.
At the young age of 17, Antonelli, hailing from Italy, is embarking on his first season in Formula 2 racing.
However, he has recently had two opportunities to test Mercedes F1 vehicles, indicating Toto Wolff's interest in evaluating his performance.
Encouraged by his observations during the trial runs, Wolff is now set to appoint young Antonelli as his new driver for the upcoming season, according to the report.
Last week in Monaco, Wolff conceded that despite Sainz being a notable contender, his search was directed elsewhere.
The head of Mercedes suggested he was open to letting Sainz join a competing Formula 1 team if it meant he could devote more time to developing Antonelli.
Reports suggest that Wolff is keen on retaining Antonelli, aiming to avoid a repeat of the situation where he saw a young Max Verstappen slip away to Red Bull.
Hamilton personally supported Antonelli for the 2025 driving position and urged Mercedes to offer him the vehicle.
Opting to trust the remarkable skills of the young prodigy means that the accomplished and seasoned Sainz will have to seek opportunities elsewhere for his subsequent move.
