McLaren’s Strategy Misstep at British Grand Prix: Coulthard’s Candid Advice to Piastri on Taking Control
McLaren's Oscar Piastri receives a dose of stark honesty with the "own it from the cockpit" remark
David Coulthard poses a challenging question to Oscar Piastri
David Coulthard inquired Oscar Piastri if he ought to have disregarded McLaren's pit stop plan during the F1 British Grand Prix.
At Silverstone, Lando Norris, who was at the forefront, lost his lead due to a poorly timed pit stop as the weather shifted, paving the way for Lewis Hamilton to overtake him and secure the victory.
Norris secured a third-place finish, outperforming Piastri, whose strategy left Red Bull's team principal Christian Horner baffled.
Piastri conveyed to Channel 4, "Lately, it seems we've had numerous weekends where, upon reflection, we believe we had a chance to win from both sides of the garage."
"We executed many aspects correctly. However, the critical decision that required accuracy? That's where we fell short."
Deciding in such a scenario is incredibly challenging for a Formula 1 team. With their two cars leading the race, closely positioned with just a half-second gap, and with rain imminent, the team faces a crucial choice: whether to have both cars pit stop, leave one on the track, or bring both in for a pit stop.
"The pressure doesn't escalate beyond that point."
"We delayed too much. It would have been wiser to opt for double stacking."
Piastri noted, "For me, it was marginally acceptable to continue on the slick tires. However, the additional lap I remained out there, the conditions deteriorated."
The Australian racer was informed that, had McLaren opted for a double stack strategy, they could have secured a first and second place finish at Silverstone.
"I'm aware, it's painful," he responded.
At that moment, I realized I would sacrifice a significant amount of time.
"Obviously, I ended up wasting much more time by remaining outside."
Piastri stated, "One more lap, and I might have been at the front of the pack. That could have altered the strategy for my pit stop once more."
"The outcome is hard to accept."
Former Formula 1 racer Coulthard reminisced with Piastri, saying, "This reminds me of a time long ago when I was with McLaren during the British Grand Prix.
"My pit stop timing was off, resulting in me making four or five stops."
"I was uncertain. I paid attention to the team since I believed they possessed a broader perspective.
"The takeaway for me was: in shifting circumstances, you must take control and lead from the front."
Piastri responded to Coulthard, saying, “I was informed that Max Verstappen had a quicker pace. In the end, the team is aware of the exact speed difference, which I am not privy to.
I had to focus intensely to move into the first position. I was aware that if I managed to take the lead, I would have the opportunity to make a pit stop before anyone else on that lap.
"The group is also taking that into account. They need to determine which vehicle crosses the finish line first."
"The condition of the track deteriorated significantly in just 30 seconds. From the driver's perspective, it's challenging."
"In such a role, you tend to believe you're braver than you actually are, convincing yourself to remain in the race!"
"For myself and the rest of the group, there are lessons to be learned to avoid making that same mistake again in the future."
