McLaren’s Piastri Prioritizes F1 Constructors’ Title Over Drivers’ Championship in 2023 Push
Oscar Piastri: McLaren's primary goal is the F1 constructors’ championship, not the drivers’ title
“Our main aim is to secure the constructors' championship for the team, and I believe we have a solid opportunity to achieve this.”
Oscar Piastri has disclosed that McLaren's primary goal this year is to secure the F1 constructors’ championship, rather than focusing on the drivers’ title.
McLaren is trailing Red Bull by only 42 points in the team rankings as they approach the Dutch Grand Prix later this month.
In the race for the drivers' title, Lando Norris is the nearest competitor to Max Verstappen, though they are separated by a gap of 78 points.
As Red Bull continues to support Sergio Perez, McLaren remains hopeful about securing their first team championship since 1998.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, Piastri detailed McLaren's objectives for the latter part of the year.
"The main goal is to secure the constructors' championship for the team, and I believe we have a solid opportunity to achieve it," Piastri stated.
"We've been narrowing the distance to Red Bull over the past six or seven races."
"In my view, I want to rank as high as possible in the drivers' standings. While winning the championship myself is a long shot, I’m still in the running. My focus is on delivering strong performances in each race to build consistency and ultimately support the team in securing the constructors' championship."
"If the situation arises where I need to assist Lando later in the season, we will certainly talk about it. However, my primary goal is to secure the constructors' championship and perform well personally."
Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, emphasized that both aspects are still "priorities" because excelling in the drivers' standings is essential for securing the constructors' championship.
"Both the drivers' and constructors' championships are important because, ultimately, to secure the constructors' title, we need both of our drivers to achieve the highest positions possible. I hope to see both drivers finishing in the top three," Brown stated.
"Currently, we're holding the second and fourth positions. The nearer we get to leading in the drivers' standings, the better our chances for the constructors' championship as well. Therefore, we're aiming for both titles since every point is crucial."
"The next major milestone we aim for is the championship. It's definitely a great feeling. The drivers, the team, and everyone involved have done an excellent job achieving 10 consecutive podium finishes. It's truly impressive."
"Heading into the summer break while vying for both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships is an exciting position to be in. There's still a lot of effort required, and it won't be a walk in the park. The second half of the year promises to be thrilling, but I'm really pleased with all the achievements we've made at McLaren."
