McLaren’s Driver Dilemma: Norris or Piastri as No.1?
McLaren is reportedly puzzled as Lando Norris is cautioned about his position as the top driver. Oscar Piastri's performance may prompt McLaren to reconsider its stance.
According to Eddie Jordan, Oscar Piastri might surpass Lando Norris as McLaren's leading driver in the near future.
McLaren does not formally designate drivers as No1 or No2, yet both Norris and Piastri have secured grand prix wins this year.
Norris secured his initial triumph in Miami prior to Piastri achieving his first win in Hungary.
Piastri gained attention in Belgium by finishing just behind George Russell, who was later disqualified, and race winner Lewis Hamilton.
Former F1 team principal Jordan discussed on the Formula For Success podcast how the race's opening battle and Piastri's duel with the two Mercedes stood out.
Toto is likely pondering, 'We need to find a way to respond to McLaren's impressive performance, as they have two outstanding drivers and appear very formidable.'
"Those two will compete against each other, battling for starting positions and race outcomes… it's thrilling for the fans but extremely challenging for the team."
"They are utterly perplexed. Is Lando the top driver in that team? Without a doubt, I affirmed yes. If you were to ask me now, I would still give the same answer."
"However, after a few more races, we may need to reconsider that."
David Coulthard responded by saying, "Having two excellent drivers challenging each other is a positive situation for McLaren."
The tranquility at McLaren was jeopardized in Hungary when Norris took a few tense laps before eventually following team instructions to allow his teammate to pass.
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull, disagreed with McLaren's decision that helped Piastri secure a win.
"Lando is the seasoned racer and the top driver, I believe," he mentioned to Sky Sports.
He stated, "Each point is crucial, especially if the championship is decided by a margin of seven points at the end of the year."
"Various teams have their own unique approaches to racing. However, Lando is the primary competitor, and eventually, you need to commit fully to one strategy."
However, McLaren has chosen not to designate Norris as their main focus.
Chief Executive Officer Zak Brown reviewed their excellent performance this season, stating, "Achieving ten consecutive podium finishes is quite impressive. Both drivers have secured victories, placing second in the drivers' championship."
"However, we acknowledge that we are not without flaws. Throughout the season, we've made mistakes. We'll take these lessons to heart and strive to get better."
