Maverick Vinales: ‘I’m going to soar…’
'…Then the bike got traction and I went forward' – Maverick Vinales.
Maverick Vinales nearly escaped a second major highside incident at the German MotoGP held at Sachsenring on Sunday.
During Saturday's qualifying, he was ejected from his Aprilia when the rear tire lost grip at Turn 10. In the grand prix on lap 7, an off-throttle incident caused him to slide through the gravel, reminiscent of dirt tracking.
"I applied the brakes at Turn 8 and almost experienced a highside, which caused me to go off track. After reviewing the data, we found no irregularities; it was simply a loss of rear grip," Vinales explained.
“I felt like I was going to soar really high. But then the bike stabilized, and I kept going straight. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how racing goes, and we have to take it as a lesson.”
The mishap caused Vinales to drop from sixth place to 18th, but he managed to recover and finish in 12th position by the end of the race.
Maverick Vinales stated that his physical state following the qualifying crash did not hinder his performance on Sunday. He estimated that, even if he hadn't gone off-track, he would still have ended up 10 seconds behind the race winner, Francesco Bagnaia.
To put it differently, Trackhouse Aprilia's rider Miguel Oliveira, who finished in sixth place, was the top non-Ducati performer.
“We've had several races where our performance hasn't met our expectations. On Fridays, we manage to reach our maximum potential, but pushing beyond that is extremely challenging,” Vinales said, after topping the timesheets on the first day in Germany.
"We have to figure out the reason. It seems like on Friday you can dominate the race, but by the end, you're trailing by 10 seconds."
"It’s fascinating to grasp. I watched Miguel’s race too, and it seemed like he had the potential to compete for the victory throughout the weekend. However, when you see his final position, he was ten seconds behind."
"Challenging to grasp and tough to make sense of."
"The way a bike handles can vary significantly depending on whether you're cycling in a group or by yourself."
Maverick Vinales, who secured a sixth-place finish in the Sprint race, was the sole factory Aprilia rider participating as his teammate Aleix Espargaro pulled out on Friday morning because of injuries sustained at Assen.
