Following a parliamentary election and an official endorsement by the European Council through a qualified majority vote, the incoming European Commission is anticipated to assume its responsibilities on December 1, 2024.

On Tuesday, Members of the European Parliament approved the nomination of Ms. Iliana Ivanova to represent Bulgaria in the European Court of Auditors.

Ms. Ivanova is presently serving as the EU Commissioner responsible for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth. She has a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations and was Bulgaria's representative at the European Court of Auditors from 2013 to 2023. Her appointment received strong support, with 581 votes supporting her, 34 opposing, and 31 abstaining.

The Bulgarian seat in the European Court of Auditors (ECA) opened up in September 2023 following Ms. Ivanova's appointment as an EU Commissioner. On September 4, 2024, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers put forth her nomination to rejoin the ECA for a term spanning from 2025 to 2030.

On Monday, the Bureau of Parliament, responsible for making decisions related to the institution's internal management, endorsed a major push to enhance efforts aimed at minimizing the Parliament's environmental impact. The body revised its environmental strategy and established fresh ecological objectives for the term spanning 2024 to 2029.

Continuing its history of implementing environmental initiatives, the European Parliament has pledged to enhance its efforts towards sustainable development in its operations. The goals set for completion by 2029 include:

Goals also focus on managing waste, conserving water, boosting recycling efforts, adopting sustainable purchasing practices, and launching programs to better incorporate biodiversity aspects into the functioning of the European Parliament.

Vice-President Nicolae Ștefănuță, who oversees the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), remarked on the Bureau's decision, stating: "The updated environmental goals position the European Parliament to enhance its ecological performance over the upcoming five years. Integrating sustainability into the Parliament's operations is crucial for all upcoming initiatives, including building upgrades, increased digitalisation, and promoting greener transportation options for members and personnel who need to commute or travel. By doing so, we hope to establish a robust model of sustainability for democracies worldwide."

During its ninth legislative term, the European Parliament demonstrated strong environmental achievements. From 2006 to 2023, it successfully cut greenhouse gas emissions by 47% measured in tonnes per Full-Time Equivalent (FTE). Energy usage saw a 53% decrease compared to 2012, measured in kilowatt-hours per square meter, while water usage dropped by 44% in cubic meters per FTE. The number of solar panels installed grew, enhancing energy efficiency and boosting renewable energy production. Moreover, the Parliament slashed food waste—comprising unsold and leftover food—by 59% per meal served since 2016, and decreased non-recycled waste by 43% per FTE. The shift towards digital processes was accelerated, leading to a 61% reduction in paper use compared to the 2010-2014 average, alongside efforts to minimize the digital carbon footprint.

In 2004, the European Parliament made its inaugural commitment to environmental policy by signing a pledge. To manage its environmental efforts, it employs the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). Notably, in 2007, it became the first legislative body in the European Union to achieve EMAS certification. The core of the European Parliament's environmental approach is to prevent emissions and minimize them when they cannot be avoided. Organizations registered with EMAS undergo an annual evaluation by an independent auditor. This registration ensures that the institution adheres to all relevant environmental regulations.
