Martin Brundle Unveils the Commercial Strategy Behind Red Bull’s Loyalty to Sergio Perez Amid Performance Slump
Martin Brundle speculates on why Red Bull is currently maintaining their trust in Sergio Perez.
According to Martin Brundle, Red Bull has refrained from replacing Sergio Perez because of the commercial advantages and sponsorship deals he provides to the Formula 1 team.
Having recently secured a new two-year contract, Perez is facing increasing scrutiny due to his lackluster performance. In the last five races, his best finish has been seventh place, and he has only added 11 points to Red Bull's total of 105 points during this period.
Perez’s significant decline in performance has resulted in his fall to sixth position in the drivers’ standings, trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by 137 points. This downturn has fueled rumors that Red Bull might consider substituting him mid-season.
Brundle described Perez's recent difficulties as "painful" to observe but suggested a possible reason for why Red Bull continues to support the 34-year-old driver from Mexico.
"It’s clear that it's commercially appealing to them and that he serves as a strong counterpart to Max," Brundle mentioned on the Sky Sports F1 podcast.
"He usually works quickly enough to gather useful information without causing any issues for Max, which suits their needs well. As a result, they have secured both championships."
“However, they suddenly face competition and can’t easily secure the constructors’ championship unless Sergio performs at his best.”
"The situation has evolved, raising questions about how long they can manage under these new circumstances. Considering Red Bull's sponsorship deals and commercial influence in both North and South America, along with the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix, would you really want to see Sergio Perez off the grid? This is the critical issue at hand."
"To be frank, if he were just an ordinary driver without any significant ties to nationality or commercial interests, they would have replaced him."
According to Brundle, if Perez were to be dismissed, it is likely that Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson would be the top candidate to replace him.
"It's challenging. The problem is that for a young driver, Verstappen can be overwhelming because he's incredibly fast and can control a car that's slightly unstable in high-speed turns," he clarified.
"One might argue that Ricciardo is mentally prepared to avoid being overshadowed by Max, but it seems Sergio has faced that struggle and should also be mentally prepared. It appears Daniel is feeling the pressure to secure his position, not to mention the possibility of being promoted to the leading team."
“Their Formula 2 drivers might not be prepared for the challenge. I believe if they were to choose anyone, Lawson would be a good candidate. It would be interesting to observe his performance and ensure he stays focused. He appears to have considerable potential.”
