Marini Advocates for Mir’s Stay at Honda, Highlights Need for Experienced MotoGP Rider Over WorldSBK Talent
Luca Marini expresses a preference for Mir to remain, suggesting an Aprilia or KTM rider over Toprak for the position. Marini was asked about his potential 2025 team-mate at Repsol Honda.
Luca Marini, who is in the initial year of his two-year contract with Repsol Honda, has highlighted his good relationship with Joan Mir, describing him as a nice individual and expressing his desire for Mir to remain with the team for the 2025 MotoGP season.
Even though this season has been disappointing, 2020 world champion Mir emphasizes that his main goal is to stay with the factory Honda team. However, a new contract has not been confirmed yet.
However, should Mir and Honda not come to terms, Marini believes it would be more advantageous to recruit a rider with established MotoGP credentials instead of targeting WorldSBK standout Toprak Razgatlioglu.
Razgatlioglu has wowed the motorcycle community by leading the Superbike championship with BMW in his first season with the team, sparking fresh speculation about a potential switch to MotoGP.
Manager Kenan Sofuoglu has often emphasized that it would only be with a factory MotoGP team. As European teams are already at capacity and Alex Rins is anticipated to extend his contract with Monster Yamaha, Honda remains the only option for 2025.
However, Sofuoglu has minimized the likelihood of Razgatlioglu joining MotoGP next season. Marini believes that Honda, which is currently at the bottom of the constructors' standings, would benefit more from having an experienced rider if Mir departs.
Marini expressed his disagreement to GPone.com regarding Razgatlioglu joining Honda, saying, "I say no!" He suggested that if a new rider were to join, it would be more beneficial to have someone from Aprilia or KTM, as they would contribute additional expertise.
"I might serve as an illustration of this since I came from Ducati. However, if a new rider joins, they need to be knowledgeable, capable of communicating details, and providing feedback in a clear and understandable manner."
Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira, both seasoned riders for KTM and Aprilia, have yet to secure their positions for the 2025 season.
