Liam Lawson Braces for Challenging F1 Return with Grid Penalty at United States Grand Prix
Liam Lawson to incur a grid penalty in his F1 comeback – the reason explained
It has been disclosed that Liam Lawson will be subject to a grid penalty at the upcoming Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
Liam Lawson will incur a 10-position grid penalty at his next Formula 1 race during the upcoming United States Grand Prix.
A 22-year-old from New Zealand has been brought into the RB – the sibling team of Red Bull – to compete in the season's last six races, taking over for Daniel Ricciardo, who hasn't been performing well.
Lawson is set to return to racing after a one-year hiatus and will make his comeback at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. However, it has been revealed that he will incur a grid penalty because of an engine change.
In a discussion with Motorsport-Total, Helmut Marko, an advisor for Red Bull's racing team, disclosed that Lawson will face a grid penalty at the upcoming race in the United States.
"Marko disclosed that the initial race might not hold much significance due to a penalty involving the engine, resulting in a ten-place demotion in the sprint race, which certainly complicates matters in Austin."
In a conversation with New Zealand's Newstalk ZB radio station following the confirmation of the driver exchange, Lawson recognized the difficulty of the situation.
"Clearly, I'm filled with joy, yet with six rounds remaining in the season, I'm stepping in during a challenging period," he expressed.
Facing this will be quite the hurdle. All of these competitors have completed most of the season already, and here I am, needing to match their level – on circuits I'm not as familiar with.
"The road ahead will be tough. I've had conversations with my parents and everyone who has supported me throughout this adventure. It's incredibly meaningful, yet there's little time to truly absorb it all – we need to dive into action immediately."
Lawson noted, “It was amusing because upon discovering the news and having the chance to inform everyone, the initial reactions or comments from everyone, encompassing my father, mother, and all the sponsors who have supported me from the start, was a sense of relief in their tone above all else.
"The overwhelming sensation was one of sheer relief rather than excitement. Honestly, that mirrors my own feelings, given the extensive journey we've embarked on and the significant effort contributed by many. It was truly thrilling."
