Lewis Hamilton Embraces Ferrari’s Iconic Red, Prioritizes Diversity Initiatives Over Livery Change for 2025 Season
Lewis Hamilton has no intentions of urging Ferrari to adopt a black Formula 1 car design when he becomes a part of the team in 2025.
Lewis Hamilton has stated that he does not plan to urge Ferrari to leave behind their signature scarlet red hues for a black F1 paint scheme upon his arrival at the team.
The seven-time world champion will leave Mercedes at the conclusion of this year, setting the stage for a high-profile switch to Ferrari in 2025, where he is set to team up with Charles Leclerc.
Mercedes, known for their classic silver racing colors since 1954, adopted a black color scheme in 2020 to support a campaign against racism.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, the team adopted the livery before switching back to silver in 2022. For the 2023 season, Mercedes opted for a black color scheme to reduce weight, and their 2024 contender will showcase a combination of both shades.
Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton was questioned about whether he plans to ask Ferrari president John Elkann for a black F1 car color scheme.
"The 39-year-old from Britain mentioned, 'It's been some time since I last drove a black car, so I doubt I'll be eager to do that right away, but no.'"
During his tenure at Mercedes, Hamilton made impactful changes and has stated that he will persist in promoting diversity upon his transition to Ferrari.
"We've certainly discussed initiatives focused on making a difference, and John along with his team are deeply involved in philanthropic activities. Therefore, we'll be collaborating closely with Mission 44 and engaging with the impactful projects they're undertaking," he detailed.
"In my opinion, within the sport, we need to keep pushing forward, but also, we'll be engaging in quite a lot of activities together beyond that, which is genuinely thrilling."
Earlier in the year, Hamilton disclosed that his efforts towards promoting diversity played a major role in his discussions with Ferrari.
"Definitely, when you consider Ferrari, they have a significant amount of effort to put in, which is why I've placed it at the top of my agenda in my discussions with John," Hamilton mentioned in February. "They're also very enthusiastic about tackling it."
In 2021, Hamilton initiated Mission44, a charitable entity focused on enhancing diversity within F1 and the broader realm of motorsports, contributing £20 million from his personal funds to support the initiative.
