Lando Norris Downplays McLaren’s Dominant Start, Claims Mercedes on Par at British GP
Lando Norris is convinced that McLaren is on par with Mercedes, asserting that their performance levels are closely matched despite McLaren's strong showing at the start of the British Grand Prix.
"We seem to be on equal footing with Mercedes, as they appear to be just as fast as we are."
Lando Norris has minimized the significance of McLaren's strong beginning at the F1 British Grand Prix weekend, stating that Mercedes appears to be on par with them in performance levels.
Norris led the way in both practice rounds at Silverstone, kicking off his home race weekend on a high note.
Oscar Piastri, racing for McLaren, secured a top-three finish in both instances, showcasing the team's remarkable speed.
Over the past year, McLaren has excelled on fast tracks such as Silverstone, which suggests Norris is optimistic about securing his first victory on home soil.
Looking back on the day, Norris mentioned, "It was a positive beginning to the weekend. This morning didn't seem that easy, though."
We adjusted things and managed to get it into a significantly better spot, which matters a lot in this context since it becomes risky and unstable at considerable velocities. It was challenging, but I'm pleased. We've made significant advancements.
"I believe we are on par with Mercedes, as they appear to be as fast as we are. It's just that they didn't increase their engine power or push as hard in the last stretch."
"We're in a favorable position, yet there's still more to discover."
In a manner that's quintessentially British, the weekend weather has defied expectations.
The majority of both sessions remained dry, however, rain impacted the final parts of FP2.
Likewise, the qualifying round for Formula 3, occurring amidst the two Formula 1 practice sessions, experienced some rainy conditions.
Despite typically performing strongly in wet conditions, such as those in Canada, Norris is keen for the weather to stay dry.
"He further mentioned, "I find pleasure in both situations. When it's a home race, I lean towards dry conditions. This is because we're currently in a favorable position and I'm not keen on straying too far from it.
"However, this is Silverstone! We're in England! While I'm prepared for any conditions, I'd rather it didn't rain."
Regarding the ambiance at home, he remarked: "It's quite nice. I would've preferred more favorable weather conditions, but thankfully, we avoided the rain. I absolutely enjoy it. It's hectic and full of life. I make an effort to reciprocate their kindness."
