Labour Introduces ‘Respect Orders’ to Tackle Street Crime and Promote Community Safety
Labour plans to introduce 'respect orders' to curb street crime
Starting in 2025, these court mandates will prohibit the most frequent perpetrators of anti-social behavior from city centers.
Political correspondent @alixculbertson
Tuesday, September 24, 2024, 11:
The Home Secretary announced that the government plans to introduce a series of "respect orders" aimed at curbing anti-social behavior.
Addressing the audience at the Labour conference in Liverpool, Yvette Cooper criticized the former Conservative leadership, branding them as "right-wing wreckers" and grouping them together with their allies in Reform.
She criticized the Conservatives for promoting "fear, division, and anger," positioning her administration as a beacon of "respect and adherence to legal principles."
The Home Secretary did not introduce any fresh initiatives but echoed the policies previously declared in the King’s Speech following their rise to power in July, along with others that were carried over from the previous Conservative administration.
A major policy initiative focuses on targeting disruptive conduct through the implementation of "respect orders." These orders aim to prohibit individuals who frequently engage in street drinking, drug use, or shoplifting from accessing city centers.
The staggered launch is set to commence in 2025, and although a civil court can expedite issuing orders, violating these will constitute a criminal offense.
Ms. Cooper declared the introduction of a "new law" aimed at protecting shop workers from assaults, although the Conservative government had already publicized this measure in April.

"She will address the conference by stating that security is fundamental for fostering unity in communities and creating the opportunities that Labour has consistently championed," she will say at the gathering. "Social justice is unattainable without first ensuring justice."
"Respect forms the cornerstone of our democratic system. The core principles of the Labour Party guide our actions and our commitment to making our streets safer."
She vowed to cut knife crime by 50% within ten years and announced a ban on ninja swords, following an introduction by a mother whose son was fatally stabbed with a ninja sword by a teenager at the conference hall where Ms. Cooper was speaking.
The previous administration enacted a prohibition on zombie knives and machetes, which took effect today. However, ninja swords were not covered under this new regulation.
Ms. Cooper announced plans to intensify restrictions on the online sale of hazardous knives, following her earlier statements that Labour intends to impose severe penalties on top executives of internet firms that engage in the illegal sale of knives.

Ms. Cooper committed to reducing violence against women and girls by 50% over the next ten years, stating: "Because we cannot and we will not allow the next generation of women and girls to endure the same violence as the previous one."

She discussed the new initiatives she unveiled, such as placing specialists for domestic abuse in emergency call centers and reforming orders for domestic abuse protection, in addition to strengthening regulations against drink spiking.
The home secretary mentioned the measures Labour has implemented to address illegal immigration since they assumed power, such as establishing the Border Security Command to dismantle the networks smuggling migrants via small boats.

Starmer’s Strategic Embrace: Aligning with Trump and Borrowing Brexit Rhetoric at Lord Mayor’s Banquet
Starmer fully embraces Trump admiration – and borrows a well-known catchphrase
Keir Starmer attended an upscale event in central London on Monday evening, delivering his inaugural speech at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet as part of his prime ministerial duties. This customary speech typically revolves around international relations, allowing Sir Keir to discuss topics such as Ukraine, Donald Trump, and China.
Senior political reporter @joncraig
Monday, December 2, 2024, 11:
The well-traveled prime minister has responded to his detractors and aligned himself with Donald Trump more closely than ever.
Following criticisms from adversaries about his frequent international trips, Sir Keir Starmer has defended his travels as beneficial to the UK.

Note: Since assuming the position of Prime Minister five months ago, Sir Keir has embarked on 10 international journeys, totaling 26 days abroad.
To give a balanced view, it should be noted that these journeys encompassed attendance at five major global gatherings: the United Nations, Group of Seven, Group of Twenty, the 29th Conference of the Parties on climate change, and the Commonwealth Heads of

It came as no shock that within the opulent, medieval grandeur of London's Guildhall, Sir Keir advocated for the accumulation of frequent flyer miles.
Dressed in the traditional white tie and tails — in contrast to his Labour predecessor Gordon Brown, who persistently declined to switch from his business suit — he spoke at the yearly Lord Mayor's Banquet, an event that has been held since 1502.
Why choose between the US and Europe when you can experience both
At this splendid event, where it is customary for the Prime Minister to speak to ambassadors, business leaders, and prominent figures from the financial sector about global matters, the Prime Minister's address encompassed a global overview.
He started notably with a flattering approach towards Donald Trump, making no reference to Joe Biden, and dismissed the notion that the UK must pick sides between the US and Europe.
He stated that neither Clement Attlee nor Sir Winston Churchill made the choice. Was he positioning himself as the successor to Labour’s revered Attlee? That might be expected. But aligning himself with Churchill, the perennial Conservative icon? That’s quite something, isn’t it?
Sir Keir emphasized that it is in the national interest for the UK to collaborate with both the US and Europe, underlining his goal to establish trade agreements with each.
The Adoration of Trump
Then there was a push for a Trump-affectionate approach. Initially, he praised the "special relationship," a concept skeptics often argue is more cherished by the UK than by the Americans.
He then remembered the time when the president-elect had "kindly invited him to dine at Trump Tower." So kind, in fact, that Foreign Secretary David Lammy later confessed to having a second serving of chicken.

Later, Sir Keir disclosed the following: "I informed him that we plan to commit more significantly than before to strengthening our transatlantic relationship with our American allies in the upcoming years."
Does this appeal to Mr. Trump? Earlier in the day at the Commons, Nigel Farage informed members of Parliament that Mr. Trump's team was "horrified" by Sir Keir's agreement regarding the Chagos Islands.

In a scathing critique of the Conservatives, accusing them of abandoning global responsibilities and leaving behind a "shocking legacy," he pledged, in a bold twist using the Brexit campaign's phrase, to "take back control."

Despite apparent indecision from the government regarding a commitment to allocate 2.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense, there was no definitive pledge or schedule provided, only a vague assurance to "establish a clear pathway," the interpretation of which remains uncertain.
Regarding Ukraine, he committed to backing the nation indefinitely "to ensure Ukraine is in the most advantageous position for negotiations" – marking his first public mention of discussions with Russia to conclude the conflict.
Sir Keir concluded his remarks by addressing his detractors once more, concerning his discussions with China's President Xi. "Ignoring the issue isn't an option," he stated. "Engagement is necessary."
His concluding statement was definitive. "Britain is back," he proclaimed.
The UK is making a comeback. Similarly, Donald Trump is returning to the spotlight. Sir Keir made it clear to the gathered diplomats and dignitaries that he is eager to engage with him professionally.

Shift in UK Strategy: Starmer Advocates for Ukrainian Strength in Anticipation of Negotiations
Major change as Starmer states Ukraine needs to be in 'optimal position for talks'
The prime minister expressed his desire for Ukraine to approach negotiations from a position of power "to ensure they can achieve a fair and enduring peace on their own conditions, one that protects their sovereignty, independence, and freedom to determine their own destiny."

For the first time, Sir Keir Starmer has stated that it is a British policy to "ensure Ukraine is in the most advantageous position possible for negotiations."
At the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London this past Monday, the prime minister expressed his desire for Ukraine to attain a position of strength that would enable them to achieve a fair and enduring peace on their own terms, ensuring their security, sovereignty, and freedom to determine their own destiny.
However, there is no doubt that this represents a major change.
Just a month ago, Sir Keir alongside French President Emmanuel Macron committed to steadfastly back Ukraine for as long as it takes to counter Russia's aggressive military actions.
War update: Situation appears 'dire' for Ukraine, top official concedes
During the summer, Rishi Sunak, who preceded him, declared that the UK's stance on Ukraine is grounded in the belief that "aggression cannot and will not succeed." He also spoke about achieving a fair and enduring peace "founded on international law and the UN charter."
If talks proceed and result in a mutual agreement, as is often the case, Russian aggression will have succeeded to some degree.
Should Russia secure effective control over a portion of Ukraine it has seized militarily, and also ensure Ukraine's non-membership in NATO for an extended period, it would partially validate Vladimir Putin's strategy.
His choice to engage in unprovoked and severe aggression towards a neighboring country has partially succeeded in its objectives.
Critics argue that the fact that Western leaders are discussing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia indicates a clear failure on their part to counteract Russian aggression.

The Western nations were unsuccessful in preventing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, believing that the prospect of immediate and severe economic penalties would be enough to deter them.
Subsequently, it did not respond with the necessary speed and cohesion to assist Ukraine in resisting the invasion.
Western officials appear prepared to acknowledge that discussions are unavoidable.
Russia appears to be approaching the maximum extent of its capacity to sustain a conflict it is clearly prevailing in, by incorporating troops from North Korea and Yemen to circumvent a second mobilization of Russian citizens, which would likely be met with public disapproval. Additionally, as inflation escalates, the Russian economy is showing signs of strain.
US President-elect Donald Trump appears resolute in his decision to accelerate negotiations, and other world leaders, from Ukraine and now Britain, appear to be coming to terms with their inevitability.

Labour’s Review Blitz: Over 60 Initiatives Launched in First Five Months of Governance
Sky News analysis reveals that the Labour party initiates a new review approximately every 2.5 days, with numerous reviews, consultations, and taskforces established across various government departments over a span of 149 days.
Political correspondent Faith L. Ridler
Tuesday, December 3, 2024, 11:
Since taking office less than five months ago, the Labour Party has initiated over 60 reviews.
Sky News has found that in just 149 days, Sir Keir Starmer's administration has initiated a large number of reviews, consultations, and task forces.
Since July 5th, a new evaluation has been scheduled every two and a half days.
This encompasses everything from a comprehensive Strategic Defence Review to an investigation into possible limitations on advertising for junk food.
The evaluations cover various sectors, including six that concentrate on healthcare issues, like the Darzi investigation of NHS conditions, and studies on the possible financial implications of legislation on assisted dying.
The Home Office has initiated seven different reviews, with one focusing on the prosecution of police officers and another examining the definition of "ninja swords."

The minister stated that his party will "not be initiating a review this week."
He announced on "Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips," saying, "We're unveiling a new strategy for transformation."
"We are unveiling our strategy focused on preparing kids for school, reducing NHS wait times, and increasing homeownership opportunities, along with other objectives detailed in our plan."

Sir Keir has termed it the "next phase" of governance, enabling the public to hold him and his team accountable for their commitments, which will be achieved by the end of the parliamentary term.
Downing Street announced that the milestones will be implemented concurrently with reforms in the public sector.
In a column for The Sun on Sunday, the prime minister likened the task of directing government operations to steering a massive oil tanker and commented that a tolerance for controlled deterioration has infiltrated some areas of Whitehall.
He penned, "The citizens of Britain are wise. They understand that a relentless emphasis on what matters most is crucial."

In their July electoral manifesto, the Labour Party outlined key objectives including enhancing economic development, ensuring energy reliability while advancing cleaner energy solutions, improving the National Health Service, and bolstering childcare and education, alongside addressing issues related to crime and the criminal justice system.
Before unveiling the specifics, Sir Keir stated: "This transformative agenda is the boldest and most forthright government proposal in decades.
"A government focused on mission-driven outcomes is not about selecting goals that are simple or inevitable; it's about tirelessly pushing for substantial enhancements in the daily experiences of the working population.
"There may be resistance to our actions, and undoubtedly challenges will arise, but this administration was chosen based on a commitment to transformation, and our strategy aligns with the needs of the working population."

UK Job Market Data Overhaul Delayed Until 2027, ONS Cautions on Current Figures Amid Policy Challenges
Update on National Employment Figures Could Be Delayed by Two Years, According to ONS
The ONS has reiterated its call for prudence in analyzing fluctuations in metrics such as unemployment and economic inactivity.
Business and finance journalist @taaffems
Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 3
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has acknowledged that the planned improvements to the inaccurate employment data for the UK might not be completed until 2027.
The Office for National Statistics has acknowledged that it probably won't manage to launch an updated Labour Force Survey (LFS) by mid-2025 as planned. The LFS is crucial as it provides the official statistics on employment and unemployment in the UK. This delay may leave government officials without clear insights into the actual conditions of the UK labor market.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey expressed concern over the significant issue of not having precise employment figures, attributing this in part to a decline in the number of individuals responding to Office for National Statistics surveys via phone.
During a discussion with the Treasury Committee last month, Professor Alan Taylor, a member of the interest rate-setting panel, emphasized that the labor market will play a crucial role in determining future rate reductions. He noted, "Our statistics in that area are not necessarily the most accurate."
The administration has developed strategies based on the assumption that there is a significant portion of the UK population that is unemployed and not seeking employment.
Just a week ago, the government declared a £240 million investment aimed at revitalizing the British workforce.

On that day, the chief economist of the Bank mentioned that the labor force participation rate has now stabilized at a level that is generally considered natural.
It was previously believed that the UK was unique among its neighboring countries because its employment levels remained below pre-pandemic figures.
The esteemed research group, the Resolution Foundation, reported that there was no increase in inactivity according to data from HM Revenue & Customs, and that employment figures had been underreported by 930,000 since 2019.
The ONS has updated the employment estimate, which is now 0.1% greater than initially estimated, reflecting population adjustments.
The Office for National Statistics has reiterated its recommendation for prudence in analyzing fluctuations in metrics such as unemployment and economic inactivity.

Starmer’s Strategic Silence: Government Opts for No Migrant Cap in ‘Plan for Change’ Amid Broader Policy Relaunch
Starmer is expected to choose a cautious approach and not commit to a specific migrant cap number during the government's 'relaunch'
The defined "milestones" will concentrate on sectors like NHS queue times and crime rates, yet the government will refrain from setting a precise cap on migrant numbers.
Political reporter @amandaakass
Sunday, December 1, 2024, 5:
Sir Keir Starmer's initial tenure of five months as leader has been anything but calm, which might explain why the government is contemplating a significant reboot.
Labour contends that they were compelled to navigate turbulent financial conditions, including reducing the winter fuel subsidy for retirees and imposing inheritance tax on farmers, due to a hidden £22 billion deficit in the national budget.
They have also committed a string of avoidable blunders, ranging from the "freebiegate" scandal to issues involving Sue Gray and Transport Secretary Louise Haigh's excessive actions.
Labour maintains that this week's "Plan for Change" is not a reset, but rather a pre-scheduled "new phase" of governance.
Sources indicate that Sir Keir plans to introduce a set of specific "milestones" – these are commitments the government aims to achieve based on the main concerns of the electorate before the upcoming election.
The goal is to transform the five broad and somewhat vague national objectives discussed during the general election into tangible advancements within a shorter timeframe.
Rishi Sunak learned the hard way that making specific numeric promises to voters is risky, yet Labour appears to have concluded that they must demonstrate more decisively to the electorate that they are taking initiative.
Further Discussion on Labour

Last week, Sir Keir delivered a speech in which he criticized former Conservative leaders for maintaining what he described as an "open border" policy. He vowed to overhaul the current points-based immigration system.
Mr. McFadden offered a more detailed perspective today, informing Sir Trevor that although they aim to reduce legal migration, the nation's requirements will vary based on the economic climate.

In response, Victoria Atkins from the Tories countered by saying, "voters are looking for some assurance."
Kemi Badenoch has committed to setting a limit on numbers, whereas Labour has not proposed any similar measures.
It should be noted that the Conservative Party also lacked a specific target for legal immigration during their tenure in office, with David Cameron's prior commitment to cut immigration figures to the "tens of thousands" later proving problematic for him.
It's possible that Sir Keir has taken a cue from Mr. Sunak's controversial vow to "stop the boats," realizing that avoiding specific figures might be wiser when addressing such a delicate topic.

UK to Simulate Frontline Resilience amid Supply Chain Crisis in New Defence Strategy Post-Ukraine Invasion
The UK plans to simulate scenarios to prepare its frontline forces with arms despite potential disruptions in the supply chain. Defense Secretary John Healey is set to present the initial defense industrial strategy since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Monday, December 2, 2024, Midnight, UK
The UK plans to conduct simulations to explore how British forces could be supported in combat situations, particularly if intense conflicts and disruptions in supply lines occur.
In the initial defense industrial strategy following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the government plans to unveil initiatives aimed at bolstering national security in response to growing worldwide threats and turbulence.
In a recent Politico podcast interview, Defence Secretary John Healey disclosed that the military's capability to engage in combat has been significantly weakened following 14 years under Conservative governance. He then revealed plans to decommission warships, military helicopters, and drones as a cost-saving measure.
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of the UK armed forces, has asserted that the nation is prepared to engage in large-scale warfare.
Mr. Healey is set to present a new strategy at a London conference on Monday, demonstrating to adversaries that the UK possesses an industrial foundation capable of innovating rapidly during wartime.
A simulated exercise is set to investigate methods for the UK defence sector and the Ministry of Defence to enhance the speed and robustness of their supply chain.
UK companies will be given priority access to public funds, a plan Mr. Healey will discuss with investors as a means to lay "the groundwork for ten years of national rejuvenation."

"National security is the cornerstone of stability and development within a country. We are communicating clearly to both the economic sector and our opponents that through a robust defense industry in the UK, we will ensure domestic safety and assert our strength internationally."
This follows the UK's donation of military aid worth millions of pounds in weaponry to Ukraine for its conflict with Russia.
The aid package includes storm shadow missiles and represents a commitment to supply Ukraine with £3 billion in military support each year. This comprehensive assistance spans training, transport, and armaments.
Last week, MI6 chief Sir Richard Moore highlighted his agency's awareness of an extremely careless Russian sabotage effort across Europe. He expressed that he had never witnessed the global situation being so perilous, particularly with the looming threat of Russia's potential success in its conflict with a neighboring country.

The move by Australia to enforce a ban on smartphones for those under 16 has sparked renewed discussions in the UK regarding additional limitations, and a Labour MP is seeking governmental backing for restrictions on social media use.
Stuart Stephens is part of a group advocating for more extensive government action and has shared his views with Sky News.

Mr. Stephens stated that his son was defending another child who was being humiliated and recorded for purposes of blackmail, a practice known as "patterning." "Mr. Stephens expressed his frustration, stating, 'There's no question that he would still be alive if it weren't for all that happened.'"

Associated Subjects:
"I am convinced that the loss of my son was due to inadequate governance and ineffective laws, period. That's the reason behind our actions.
"I'm unable to share the content we discovered on his mobile device, yet it was truly appalling. Much of what was seen is unforgettable. Particularly for children, whose brains are still developing, being exposed to such dreadful images can have a profound impact on their future selves, which ultimately does no good for society."
Mr. Stephens further commented, "You never imagine that this could happen to you.
"He immersed himself in his own universe through his smartphone. It's crucial to strengthen the existing laws, rather than diluting them."
Mr. Stephens endorses a proposed bill by Labour MP Josh MacAlister that aims to increase the minimum age at which young people can consent to share their data with social media platforms from 13 to 16. This change seeks to protect them from receiving unwanted material driven by algorithms.
This extends beyond the provisions of the Online Safety Act, enacted last year, which the regulatory body Ofcom is set to roll out incrementally starting next year.
Government officials have vowed to impose penalties on technology firms that do not adequately address damaging content, including violence, explicit content, and false information, and fail to enforce strict age verification measures on their platforms.
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle is not inclined to completely prohibit smartphones for those under 16, yet he maintains that all options remain open for consideration.

Mr. MacAlister, who previously worked as a teacher and currently serves as the MP for Whitehaven and Workington, thinks it's crucial for parents to have the ability to prevent their children from excessively browsing negative content on social media. He is seeking governmental backing for this initiative.
The lawmaker, after discussions with parents, medical experts, and technology specialists, expressed to Sky News his worries about data indicating that the typical 12-year-old logs 21 hours a week on the internet.
"Mr. McAllister noted that the issue has become so prevalent that it's brought up in family conversations nationwide, acknowledged by parents, educators, and even the kids themselves."
In the UK, the Online Safety Act serves as a significant inaugural law, primarily targeting clearly detrimental material such as violent visuals and pornography.
"In regions such as Australia, various US states, and France, authorities are recognizing that the broader impact of addictive social media on smartphones is diverting children from engaging in other activities."
"My legislation aims to bring this discussion into the parliamentary sphere and convince the government to take action by implementing a series of steps to achieve one straightforward objective."
The proposal involves creating a distinct category of smartphones for users under the age of 16, designed to be safer and less habit-forming. Additionally, it would automatically log children out after they have used their phones for a certain period.
"I believe it's not too late to address this problem. We can definitely establish some fresh regulations concerning it."

Sky News interviewed parents who are concerned that even permissible content is dominating their children's daily activities. The organization Smartphone Free Childhood, established by parents, has now amassed 150,000 members who advocate for the use of basic mobile phones devoid of applications.
Susie Husemeyer, a member of the group, is making efforts to limit her 12-year-old daughter Amelia's smartphone usage.
After presenting her with a smartphone during her final year of elementary school and initially setting a usage limit, she reconsidered and has since turned off the internet on the device.
Amelia mentioned, "I need to stay connected for texts, music during bus rides, and phone conversations. There's significant peer pressure about not using WhatsApp. Many of my friends question why I don't use it, often commenting, 'Your parents are so strict. Why won't they let you do that?'"
Even though her peers are frequently absorbed in their smartphones, she stands by her parents' choice.
"Such activity can negatively impact your mental well-being, particularly in the absence of limits."
"Occasionally, I find myself wishing I had WhatsApp because when friends organize a birthday party and create a group chat, I end up missing out."
"Typically, I refrain. Things might simplify if a ban was universal."

Susie expressed her concerns, stating, "It's clear she's being excluded. As a parent, it's tough because we're simply attempting to make the best decisions for our kids."
"However, it's important to note that the majority of our kids' friends are also using mobile phones equipped with numerous features, and these gadgets can be incredibly addictive."
"I would urge the government to recognize the critical importance of protecting the innocence and joy of childhood. The experiences of childhood, whether positive or neglected, have a lasting impact on brain development and endure throughout a person's life."
Several organizations focused on youth welfare argue that completely prohibiting smartphones or social media is overly harsh for teenagers and overlooks the advantages these devices can offer when utilized responsibly.
Sir Peter Wanless, the chief executive of the NSPCC, remarked: "Social media has become a fundamental component of the lives of the youth. It offers them the chance to interact with peers and relatives, as well as to explore and express creativity.
"We recognize the worries regarding children using social media platforms that may inherently be risky for them. Nonetheless, it's important that children are provided with online experiences that are suitable for their age, instead of being completely isolated from these environments."

Deadline 2029: Building Owners Face Prison if Unsafe Cladding Remains, Government Warns
Property owners may be incarcerated if they fail to eliminate hazardous cladding by 2029, a minister informed Sky News, emphasizing the government's focus on landlords who have not addressed cladding issues seven years following the deadly Grenfell Tower blaze.

Monday, December 2, 2024, 11:
Under a new government proposal, property owners might be incarcerated if they fail to strip hazardous cladding from their buildings by 2029.
A government official has cautioned property owners that they are being targeted, as he announced the introduction of a new initiative on Monday designed to expedite the removal of hazardous cladding.
Seven years following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, which claimed 72 lives, thousands still reside in buildings wrapped in hazardous cladding. This issue has left many unable to sell or refinance their apartments.
Latest in Politics: Starmer's Bold New Commitments
Officials have reported that as many as 7,000 structures potentially contain hazardous substances that have not been pinpointed yet. Additionally, the efforts to fix existing problems in tall buildings have been progressing at a sluggish pace.
The strategy will unveil new goals to address hazardous structures in England, hold irresponsible property owners responsible, and provide a resolution for impacted residents.
The government announced that it will allocate resources for the implementation of the new regulations, ensuring that local governments, fire and rescue services, and the building safety regulator are equipped to address numerous instances of hazardous cladding annually.
According to the strategy, by 2029, all structures taller than 59 feet (18 meters) that are part of the government program and have hazardous cladding will have been repaired.
Structures exceeding 36 feet (11 meters) in height that are equipped with hazardous cladding must be fixed or have a scheduled completion date by 2029.

On Sky News, speaking to Kay Burley, Building Safety Minister Alex Norris expressed a firm stance on property owners neglecting remediation responsibilities. He stated, "For those who own these buildings and have been ignoring their duty to repair them, understand that we are actively pursuing you. We insist on having these buildings fixed, or else legal consequences will ensue."
"Authorities possess a variety of enforcement tools at their disposal, from imposing fines to issuing prison terms, applicable in health and safety matters."
"We are dedicated to utilizing our entire toolkit in various ways for each structure to ensure resolution. We have pledged to achieve this by the decade's end."
Mr. Norris stated that there are approximately 4,000 to 7,000 buildings with combustible cladding that remain unaccounted for.

Activists have expressed that the government's proposals are "extremely disappointing" and will further complicate an already difficult process by introducing additional bureaucratic hurdles.
End Our Cladding Scandal, an organization advocating for tenants in at-risk structures, stated that the government is "still far from a comprehensive solution" regarding building safety.
The organization described the 2029 deadline as nine years beyond the initial launch of the Building Safety Fund, labeling it as "underwhelming." Furthermore, they criticized the penalties for landlords as "meaningless," unless leaseholders and residents receive a definitive timeline for when their homes will be completely secured.

Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner stated, "The progress on remediation has been excessively slow for an extended period. We are implementing firm measures to correct this issue and ensure that homes are safe."
"Our expedited recovery strategy guarantees that those accountable for securing buildings will implement the necessary and deserved improvements for residents."

Sir Chris Wormald has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary and leader of the civil service.
The individual, aged 56, set to guide the prime minister on crucial policy matters, will assume Simon Case's position, which pays £200,000 annually, starting 16 December following Case’s resignation due to health concerns.
Sir Chris has been serving as the permanent secretary for the Department of Health and Social Care since 2016, where he guides the health secretary on policy matters and oversees the department's finances, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sir Keir Starmer, who endorsed Sir Chris's appointment, stated that he "contributes extensive experience to this position at a crucial time in the transformative efforts initiated by this new administration."
The choice to elevate Sir Chris marks the most significant move of Sir Keir's leadership to date. Sir Chris, a notable bureaucrat, has managed extensive overhauls across various government sectors, an achievement likely to have impressed the prime minister.
Sir Keir stated that his "mission-driven" government will transform the manner in which the government operates for the nation, necessitating a "total overhaul of the UK's governmental framework to enact profound and far-reaching reforms."

Key Update: Starmer Faces a Major Decision in His Leadership
Property owners may be incarcerated if they fail to remove hazardous cladding by 2029.
Grieving families and lawmakers demand stricter regulations on mobile phone usage for children under 16.
"Implementing this magnitude of transformation demands outstanding leadership from the civil service," Sir Keir noted.
"Chris is perfectly suited to advance our agenda for transformation, and I am eager to collaborate with him as we execute the new government's mission, enhancing the welfare of the workforce and fortifying our nation through ten years of rejuvenation."
What are the responsibilities of a cabinet secretary?
This individual serves as the primary civil service advisor to the prime minister and their cabinet.
Their function is to assist and provide guidance for the management of the cabinet and its committees by preparing agendas and aiding the government in achieving a consensus on policy decisions.
They frequently serve as one of the Prime Minister's top consultants regarding governmental operations and significant policy choices.
The collaborative dynamic between the Prime Minister and the cabinet secretary significantly impacts the level of influence held by the cabinet secretary.
They additionally oversee guaranteeing that the civil service implements crucial manifesto promises and policies, facilitating agreements among ministers and departments, and ensuring these agreements are executed.
While not every cabinet secretary serves as the head of the civil service, recent appointees have typically held this role.
This entails overseeing civil servants, organizing gatherings with departmental permanent secretaries, spearheading changes and enhancements within the civil service, and advocating for the civil service in both parliament and public media.
Typically, the prime minister appoints cabinet secretaries, often based on suggestions from the retiring cabinet secretary.
Following Mark Sedwill's resignation in 2020, a formal competitive process was initiated to find his replacement. Despite not having applied for the position, Simon Case was reportedly invited by Boris Johnson to assume the role.
Applicants vying to succeed Mr. Case were required to submit a resume and a cover letter, and then undergo an interview conducted by a committee comprising ex-cabinet secretaries, permanent secretaries, the leader of the Ministry of Defence, and the civil service commissioner.
Sir Keir ultimately held the authority to fill the position, which was listed with a salary of approximately £200,000.
Sir Chris expressed his pleasure at being chosen to head the highly skilled civil service, describing it as a "privileged role."
"The administration has established a definitive directive – a bold plan centered on the workforce. This will necessitate a collective commitment to the transformative policies affecting how the state functions in Britain," he added.
"I am eager to collaborate with leaders from various sectors of government to guarantee that the civil service possesses the necessary skills to effectively serve throughout the entire nation."
Professor Sir Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer for England, will lead the Department of Health until a new permanent secretary is appointed to take over from Sir Chris Wormald.
Gatherings akin to chickenpox parties
Last year, during the COVID Inquiry, Sir Chris presented his testimony, which included a review of his communications with the former cabinet secretary, Mark Sedwill, from the early stages of the pandemic.
Lord Sedwill expressed his belief that Boris Johnson and his associates had not yet grasped that, similar to chickenpox, it might be desirable for people to contract the virus and build herd immunity before another outbreak occurs.
"He mentioned that they prefer the situation to unfold gradually, ideally during warm and dry conditions."
Sir Chris replied, "That's correct. We emphasize this at every meeting, but they still don't seem to understand."
He informed the investigation that his comments were "mirroring the scientific guidance available at the time" from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), and conceded that his response had been "extremely lax."
A 'reliable option'
Sir Chris Wormald was selected for the position over other high-ranking present and past civil servants.
The other candidates included Sir Olly Robbins, previously a director-general of the civil service who participated in Brexit negotiations, Dame Antonia Romeo, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Justice, and Tamara Finkelstein, the permanent secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Certain individuals in Whitehall consider Sir Chris to be a more cautious selection than the alternatives.
Simon Case will resign following service under four Prime Ministers.
He assumes the role previously held by Mr. Case, 45, who took office in September 2020 and worked under four different prime ministers.
In a message to government staff regarding his departure in September, Mr. Case wrote: "As some of you might be aware, I have been receiving treatment for a neurological issue for the past year and a half. Although I am mentally prepared to continue, physically, I am unable to do so.
"I regret having to clarify this, but my choice is based entirely on health concerns and is unrelated to any other factors."

Mr. Case declared his departure after a challenging period at Downing Street, marked by harmful leaks and internal disputes that dominated the discussions, leading to mounting frustration for Sir Keir.
It was reported that the senior government official had a strained relationship with Sue Gray, the former chief of staff for Sir Keir, who resigned in October after allegations from certain Labour members regarding the party's management of ministers accepting gifts.

Questions Arise Over Louise Haigh’s Alleged Stolen Phone After Metadata Suggests Post-Theft Photo
Photo of Louise Haigh's Stolen Phone Allegedly Taken Post-Theft
According to Sky News, police grew suspicious when they believed a photo submitted by Ms. Haigh of her phone was snapped following the reported theft.
By Rob Powell, political analyst, and Alexandra Rogers, political journalist
Saturday, November 30, 2024, 7:
Sources have informed Sky News that authorities probing the case of Louise Haigh's reportedly "stolen" phone suspect that a picture she provided of the device was captured following the supposed theft.
According to two informants who examined the metadata linked to the image – data that typically indicates the timing of a photo's capture – authorities concluded that the picture was snapped after the date Ms. Haigh claimed her phone was stolen.
When contacted about the claim, individuals familiar with Ms. Haigh remained silent.
The MP from Sheffield stepped down from her role as transport secretary on Friday following a Sky News report that she had admitted guilt and was convicted in 2014 concerning a supposedly stolen phone.
It is understood that the conviction is connected to allegations of fraud.
The ex-transport secretary asserts that the event was an honest error that did not bring her any advantages.

Louise Haigh's departure instigates blame shifting within Labour ranks
Coverage Areas:
According to information obtained by Sky News from three individuals, the investigation into the stolen phone was reportedly advanced by Ms. Haigh for personal advantages.
Sky News had communicated with an individual who claimed that the mobile device was utilized to phone Ms. Haigh's mother shortly after the alleged theft was reported, although this claim could not be confirmed.
On Thursday evening, Ms. Haigh explained that the situation occurred when she was robbed during an evening out in 2013.
She mentioned that she had informed the police about the incident and provided them with an inventory of what she thought was stolen, which included a work mobile phone.
In her interview with Sky News, she mentioned that she later realized the mobile phone in question had not been stolen.
During this period, she received a replacement work phone. Upon activating her initial work phone, it "alerted the authorities, leading to a request for me to come in for questioning," she explained.

"She stated, 'My lawyer recommended I remain silent during the interview, and I regret heeding that suggestion.'"
"Following my lawyer's counsel, I entered a guilty plea, although it was an honest error and I derived no benefit from it."
"The judges agreed with all the points made and granted me the mildest sentence possible—a discharge."
Sources indicate Ms. Haigh is of the opinion that she fully reported the incident at the time of her appointment to the shadow cabinet in 2020.
On Friday, officials from Downing Street announced that Ms. Haigh stepped down following the revelation of "new information," yet they did not confirm whether the prime minister was aware of the conviction at the time he formed his cabinet in July.
On Friday, a source informed Sky News' political editor, Beth Rigby, that the recent story that surfaced on Thursday did not align with the information Sir Keir had when he appointed Ms. Haigh to his shadow cabinet.

It appears that the prime minister was "unable to resolve the dilemma," leading to the recommendation that the cabinet minister step down.
Supporters of Ms. Haigh assert that she disclosed all the details of her conviction and that Sir Keir had shown understanding for her situation, noting that it was unfortunate the police chose to pursue charges against her.
