Inside the KTM Conundrum: Why Francesco Guidotti Isn’t to Blame for MotoGP Struggles
Analysis: Why Francesco Guidotti Isn't to Blame for KTM's Issues
Doubts Emerge Regarding the Departing Leader's Responsibility for KTM's Performance
Following the announcement of a new team leader, KTM experienced a highly positive practice session ahead of the Japanese MotoGP.
In 2025, Aki Ajo is set to take over from Francesco Guidotti, marking a significant shift for the manufacturer in a season that hasn't met its high hopes.
During Friday's practice session at Motegi, Brad Binder recorded the quickest time, ensuring KTM remained in the limelight.
Guidotti stated, "I don't notice any issues," despite some individuals in the paddock criticizing KTM for his departure.
Michael Laverty from TNT Sports clarified that the team manager of a MotoGP squad does not hold accountability for how well the motorcycle performs.
"According to Laverty, they generally do not participate in the technical procedures."
The responsibility falls on the team's technical director, the testing team, and the engineers.
Francesco's role has involved uniting the team.
"On either side of the garage, there are two distinct teams. The crew chiefs responsible for Brad and Jack Miller's teams manage their respective groups. Francesco then compiles the data and fosters a collaborative atmosphere among them."
"He fosters cooperation and facilitates communication between the engineers and the support team."
His role involves interacting with the public and the external community, and he performs this task exceptionally.
"His primary responsibility is to coordinate the race weekends, establish plans, and create a structured approach. In my view, he has successfully met these objectives."
A slight jab at KTM…
KTM's factory rider, Miller, had earlier dismissed the idea that Guidotti was responsible for their bike's performance lagging behind Ducati and occasionally Aprilia, calling such claims "nonsense."
Miller commented that Francesco has been an exceptional leader for the team, particularly with his work at Pramac, which has elevated them to their current standing. He believes that with the appropriate resources, Francesco could have achieved similar success at KTM.
Gavin Emmett, a commentator for TNT Sports, responded to Miller’s comments by saying, “There was a subtle jab at KTM… I'm uncertain about what he might be implying.”
Bjorn Estment, a member of Binder's close-knit team, commented: "Francesco is a wonderful person. Since I joined, he has treated me well and has performed excellently."
"He's widely recognized in the racing community, even from the times I used to watch him on television. He has a constant smile, and everyone enjoys his company."
"The sport is constantly changing, and occasionally, difficult choices must be made. Anyone who acquires Francesco will be fortunate."
Laverty stated: "Ducati has improved this year, uncovering an additional three tenths of a second that no one expected."
With the introduction of the new Michelin tire, some teams are able to gain better grip. However, KTM and Honda are experiencing some vibration issues with it.
"It's challenging for KTM as they have spent several years making progress, but it seems like they've regressed and aren't as strong as they were last year."
"It can be challenging for those in authority to explain why they haven't achieved the same outcomes as they did a year earlier."
I compare it to a football team that points the finger at the coach. Francesco was in a precarious position, and they went ahead and executed the final blow.
Pedro Acosta holds the fifth position in the MotoGP rankings, while Binder is in sixth place as they approach the Japanese MotoGP. This positions KTM as having the leading riders among those not competing for Ducati.
Nevertheless, the producer has not succeeded in launching a competitive bid for the championship this year.
