Horner’s Frustration Evident as Perez Struggles Continue: Red Bull’s Team Dynamics Under Scrutiny
Christian Horner questioned on his apparent frustration over Sergio Perez's mistake
Christian Horner scrutinized for displaying a gesture of frustration in response to Sergio Perez's blunder
Christian Horner was questioned about the apparent "annoyance" he showed through a disheartened head shake directed at Sergio Perez.
Red Bull's scrutinized number two driver triggered a stoppage during last weekend's F1 British Grand Prix qualifiers by spinning out at Copse corner.
Team chief Horner was seen expressing disappointment through a head shake due to the error that resulted in Perez's 19th position qualification at Silverstone.
Horner expressed his displeasure, noting the collective underperformance of his cars, highlighting the agitation stemming from Perez's mistake.
Losing Checo in the first qualifying session was disappointing. He was absent from the first practice due to Isack Hadjar taking the wheel, yet he managed a solid performance in the second practice. We believed he was capable of finishing within the top six.
"It was extremely disappointing to have the car drop out in Q1. That's the current situation."
Horner has acknowledged that Red Bull's choice to extend Perez's contract in response to his strong performance at the start of the season was a strategy aimed at alleviating stress and boosting his confidence.
However, it hasn't been successful. His recent string of errors has led to increased speculation about whether Red Bull will take him out of their vehicle.
When questioned, Horner was inquired whether Red Bull had prematurely secured him with a renewed agreement.
"He replied, 'Each motorist varies.'"
"Different drivers require different forms of motivation; some benefit from a supportive gesture, while others may need a more forceful push. This can also fluctuate on a weekly basis."
Perez commenced the British Grand Prix from the pit lane and ended up in 17th place, with Zhou Guanyu being the only driver to finish behind him, following Red Bull's unsuccessful bet on his tyre strategy.
However, his recent challenging weekend enabled McLaren to narrow their deficit to Red Bull to 78 points in the constructors’ standings.
"Horner responded, saying, 'They've managed to secure seven points from us.'"
"We’re highly conscious of it."
"To secure a constructors' championship, it's essential for both vehicles to earn points."
Perez effectively countered the early-season challenges by securing second place, just behind Verstappen, on three occasions, providing Red Bull with the perfect outcomes.
Simultaneously, Daniel Ricciardo, who was rumored to be his successor, found himself in a series of disappointing performances while racing for the RB affiliate team.
As the RB20's supremacy has diminished and the competition in the field has tightened, Verstappen continues to battle at the forefront, yet Perez is once again facing difficulties.
Inquiries have resurfaced regarding Ricciardo potentially taking over Perez's position, as Red Bull's young talent Liam Lawson had the opportunity to drive the RB20 during a promotional event, a timing that Horner claims is merely coincidental.
