Horner Unfazed by Newey’s Move to Aston Martin, Emphasizes Red Bull’s Depth and Focus Amid F1 Rivalries
Is Christian Horner likely to feel "more concerned" if Adrian Newey switched to Ferrari or McLaren?
Question posed to Christian Horner on whether he perceives Aston Martin as "less intimidating"
Christian Horner, the team principal for Red Bull's Formula 1 team, has stated that the team is concentrating on its own performance rather than being concerned about the possible challenge from Aston Martin after they acquired Adrian Newey.
Newey played a pivotal role in Red Bull's triumph in securing the championship titles with Sebastian Vettel from 2010 to 2013, and more recently with Max Verstappen from 2021 to 2023.
Earlier in the year, Red Bull announced that Newey would depart from the team. Subsequently, Aston revealed on Tuesday, just before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, that it had successfully enlisted the renowned designer to join its ranks in 2025.
Newey's move to Aston Martin coincides with a decline in Red Bull's performance in 2024, as McLaren narrows the gap in both championship contests.
In response to Sky F1's inquiry about his concerns over Newey moving to Aston, which is perceived as less competitive than a direct adversary, Horner remarked, "Should they develop an outstanding car and Lance Stroll secures a championship title in 2026, you'll acknowledge it was a wise decision.
"Ultimately, our only option is to hope he finds success moving forward."
"The team possesses significant aspirations, with Lawrence Stroll being an individual of strong motivation."
"However, they aren't the sole rivals: Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren. All of them are formidable contenders. Thus, our attention is solely on our own performance."
Horner is confident that Red Bull's technical team possesses significant talent and expertise, ensuring their success even after Newey leaves.
"He began by saying, 'Adrian has been a part of our lives for nearly two decades, and we've shared many wonderful moments together during that time.'"
"He's a companion, serves as my daughter's godfather, and together we accomplished remarkable feats during that period."
"Over the past eight or nine years, there was a moment around 2014 when he nearly exited. Since then, it became crucial for us to ensure we were prepared to take over and continue the effort seamlessly if he decided to leave.
Clearly, he has engaged in various projects over time, including Valkyrie and the RB17. When he made the decision to move to Aston Martin, opting for equity and shareholding, it's understood that the entire organization will essentially be under his supervision. He believes he still possesses that drive.
"All we can do is hope for his utmost success."
"However, we will reflect on the moments he spent among us with deep affection, yet life moves forward."
"Our team is exceptional, boasting both talent and depth. The departure of Eric Cantona didn't halt Manchester United's victories."
"Progress is essential, and I believe we possess the necessary resilience and capacity to continue with this legacy."
