Helmut Marko Denies Liberty Media Influence in Sergio Perez’s Red Bull Retention Amid Performance Concerns
Helmut Marko dismisses speculation about Liberty Media's influence on Red Bull's choice to retain Sergio Perez.
Helmut Marko has refuted claims that Liberty Media played a role in Red Bull's decision to continue with Sergio Perez.
Helmut Marko has rejected claims that F1's owners, Liberty Media, stepped in to keep Sergio Perez at Red Bull so he could race in his home country of Mexico.
This past Monday, Red Bull’s top executives convened after the Belgian Grand Prix to deliberate on Perez’s continued tenure with the team.
Perez's recent struggles, with only 28 points earned in the last eight races, have put Red Bull at risk of losing their lead in the constructors' championship to McLaren.
Consequently, Red Bull was giving serious thought to substituting Perez with either Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson.
Christian Horner has stated that Perez will continue driving, aiming to recover his form at circuits where he has historically excelled, such as Azerbaijan and Singapore.
Soon after the announcement, F1-Insider reported that Liberty Media requested Red Bull to rethink their decision to fire Perez.
They were worried that Perez being taken off the grid would seriously affect the financial outcomes of the race in Mexico.
Marko rejected those theories during his conversation with Speedweek.
He stated that the claims suggesting Liberty Media wants him to race in Mexico are false.
"[Liberty] definitely wants him to race in his home country, but our decision on the driver is not influenced by Liberty’s preferences."
Red Bull seems to be offering complete backing to Perez, as Marko emphasizes the importance of maintaining stability.
Red Bull is ahead in the standings by a margin of only 42 points over McLaren, and Max Verstappen has not secured a victory in the last three races.
"Sergio Perez will continue driving for Red Bull Racing after the summer hiatus since we have upcoming races at circuits where he performed well last year, and we're relying on consistency," he mentioned.
He has consistently demonstrated strong performances, and last Saturday at the final race weekend in Spa, he secured a quick third-place finish.
"Perez doesn't need to increase his speed; instead, he should focus on being more consistent. Considering the other options, he remains our best choice."
