Helmut Marko Criticizes Lando Norris’ “Pathetic” Radio Outbursts in Verstappen Duel at Austrian GP
Helmut Marko criticizes Lando Norris for his "disappointing" radio grievances during his clash with Max Verstappen
Helmut Marko showed disapproval for Lando Norris' conduct through the team's radio communications.
Helmut Marko, advisor to the Red Bull Formula 1 team, labeled Lando Norris' grievances over the radio during the Austrian Grand Prix as "pathetic".
Norris and Max Verstappen were in a fierce battle for the first position during Sunday's race at the Red Bull Ring.
Before their confrontation at Turn 3, Norris had made several bold overtaking maneuvers.
In response, Verstappen slightly altered his direction while slowing down, prompting Norris to express his dissatisfaction through the team's communication system.
Norris was advocating for the Formula 1 officials to intervene regarding Verstappen's defensive maneuvers, especially when he believed the Dutch driver kept his leading position by leaving the track.
Marko found Norris's response via the team radio to be lackluster.
"Marko expressed to OE24 that Norris's conduct on the radio was disappointing."
"However, such incidents occur and I'd consider it a mishap on the track, though it's probable that Norris exceeded his capabilities."
A further aspect of the situation is the strong bond of friendship between the two individuals.
Norris hinted post-race that his bond with Verstappen might be at risk unless Verstappen offers an apology or accepts blame for the mishap.
Marko believes that Norris' suggestion for Verstappen to apologise does not improve the circumstances.
Norris' suggestion that Max ought to say sorry isn't particularly beneficial. However, they plan to have a conversation about it,” he further mentioned.
"Usually, they travel as a pair, but on this occasion, they took different flights. Hence, Max experienced a peaceful journey back."
