"George Russell delved into Hamilton's numbers" – Russell credits Hamilton's data for securing pole position in Canada
George Russell disclosed that analyzing Lewis Hamilton's racing data was key to his pole position achievement in Canada.
George Russell disclosed that due to his challenges with speed at the Canadian Grand Prix, he had to examine Lewis Hamilton's data during the third free practice session (FP3).
Russell secured his second pole position in Formula 1, edging out Max Verstappen as both competitors recorded the same lap times.
This marked a significant comeback for Mercedes, demonstrating exceptional speed during practice sessions.
Hamilton led the timing charts with an advantage of almost 0.4 seconds, prompting Russell to examine the telemetry of the seven-time world champion to figure out how to increase his speed.
"Russell commented, 'This morning, Lewis was just unstoppable and had a significant lead over me.'"
"I spent a considerable amount of time examining his information to grasp the unique approaches he was employing. Honestly, this insight was significantly beneficial to me."
"Before this qualifying round, I'm truly happy that we managed to achieve this. It feels like a just reward for all the effort we've dedicated."
"The car has been performing incredibly well this weekend."
Mercedes has faced a challenging year up to this point, as the team has not managed to secure a podium finish yet in 2024.
Russell expressed satisfaction in demonstrating that the diligent efforts of the Mercedes team behind the scenes are beginning to yield results.
"Such excitement," Russell commented. "It's been some time since we've felt this way.
"A lot of effort is being put in at Brackley and Brixworth, and it's taken some time for us to get back into contention. It sometimes seemed as though all that effort wasn't yielding results."
Russell perceives that Mercedes is at last discovering an optimal performance level with their vehicle.
He detailed, "Previously, we faced significant challenges with understeer," he said. "The previous season was marked by excessive oversteer, and we've been attempting to strike a balance between our experiences from last year and this year.
"It seems as though we're finally tuning into that ideal place at the moment. Honestly, it's a sentiment we've expressed for quite a while. However, there's genuinely a feeling of reassurance in witnessing it manifest into leading the pack."
