Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as connections to Adrian Newey persist.
Insiders at the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the recruitment of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to begin working for a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that despite the ongoing rumors, resolving the issues isn't something that falls on the shoulders of just one person.
“It’s about focusing on our current status and output. We need to identify what’s progressing positively and what’s not, and then work on improving things for 2025.”
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, laying the groundwork for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” responded Alonso. “We’re reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend.”
"One motivated weekend, similar to this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races just seconds apart, either just ahead or just behind each other. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to its absolute limits, even beyond 100%, which resulted in me finishing in P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must stay patient and remember that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to step up our game. We have to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being at the bottom to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This is a clear example.”
"Mercedes began the season just like we did. During the first four races, we were on par with them, and they’ve already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating, "Until we get an upgrade on the car, this is the best we can do, and it's simply not sufficient."
"Performance in Monza left much to be desired. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also subpar."
"I believe that without introducing new components, there won't be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The group understands what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. We're staying together and continuing to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
