Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin’s Ongoing Struggles: ‘We Need More Than Just One Man
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
"I'm not one to make excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than merely a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his future team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso remarked, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that solving the problems isn't the responsibility of a single person."
"We're focusing on our current state and our ongoing projects. It's about recognizing which aspects are progressing well and which are not, and then using that knowledge to better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could supervise the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has committed significant funds towards a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory requirements.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they go all out in 2026
"We're helpless in this situation," Alonso commented. "Honestly, we're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost each weekend."
"During a particularly inspiring weekend such as this one, I believe my identity will remain entirely unknown."
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in races, typically finishing just two or three seconds apart, either in front or behind each other. This weekend, I performed a bit better, feeling very comfortable with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits. That effort resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that the main goal is set for 2026."
"However, as a team, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso commented, “I believe we still have time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from last place to standing on the podium in four months, providing us with clear evidence."
“Similarly, Mercedes had the same beginning as we did. In the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient and won't improve until an upgrade is made.
“Didn’t meet the mark in Monza. Fell short in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well.
"I believe that significant changes won't occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
“This is the strategy. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain together. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we're facing.”
