Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating around the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified recently regarding Aston Martin as his potential next team, while rumors of a possible move to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that solving these issues isn't the responsibility of just one person."
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year would enable him to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has poured substantial resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a new deal with Alonso that extends through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
"There's nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We're dependent on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all each weekend."
"A weekend filled with inspiration, similar to what I'm experiencing, is something I know will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have had many races where we've been very close, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind one another. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Yes, it's frustrating. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team could come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to earning a spot on the podium within a span of four months, providing us with clear evidence."
"Moreover, Mercedes began the season on an equal footing with us. We matched Mercedes in the first four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't subscribe to making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands what's at stake and is giving their all. We're staying united and continuing to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point, and today we nearly secured two points. This is the challenge we face."
