Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season.
"Is it sufficient to secure race wins from now until the season's end? I don't believe so just yet, but we've made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has indicated that Ferrari needs to enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, finishing ahead of McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Before Piastri took his second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season. Monaco suited our car's unique characteristics at that time. Similarly, Monza is a very unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We have plenty of work ahead, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
“We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. We need to approach each race with a fresh perspective. We adjusted our strategy after Monaco for the Montreal race, and as evidenced by the significant differences between these two weekends, each event can vary greatly.”
"We experienced three or four of our toughest races this season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't face such challenging races again moving forward, and I believe we won't."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next because that's not realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not yet, but we are moving in the right direction."
