Fernando Alonso Denies Adrian Newey Rumor as Aston Martin Struggles Continue: ‘We Need More Than One Man’
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"Aston Martin's challenges won't be met with excuses," says Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him possibly moving to Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential switch to Ferrari have diminished.
“At this point, it’s all just speculation, and I believe it’s not solely the responsibility of one individual to make improvements,” Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what is progressing well, what isn't, and work towards making 2025 better."
Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into developing a new Silverstone facility and has extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to design an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a significant push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We are dependent on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend, similar to this one for me, is sure to remain entirely unknown."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been very close, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those instances where I performed slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed myself perhaps beyond my limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing, but we must remain patient. We need to keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are very strong and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, saying, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot in just four months, showing significant improvement. This gives us clear examples to follow.”
"Mercedes had a similar start to ours. In the first four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Hence, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient and needs an upgrade.
"Underwhelming performance in Monza. Disappointing results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
