Fernando Alonso Breaks Silence on Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who currently serves as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. He will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers about Aston Martin potentially being his future team have intensified recently, while speculation about him joining Ferrari has diminished.
"At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just speculations and it's not solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we are generating. It's crucial to identify what is progressing well and what is not, and to use that understanding to better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant financial commitments towards a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the close of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured the 11th spot at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparation phase for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend.”
"During an inspiring weekend like this one, I understand that it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling confident with the car and pushing it perhaps even beyond its limits. As a result, I secured P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to remain patient and recognize that the main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to step up our game. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from the bottom to a podium finish within four months. Therefore, we have concrete instances."
“Mercedes began the season just like we did. In the first four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance was lacking in Monza. It also fell short in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe that, without introducing new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we are staying together and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that will be our challenge."
