Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Italian GP Win Not Enough to Secure 2024 F1 Season Dominance
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari's recent improvement is insufficient for consistent race victories for the remainder of the season. He remarked, "While it's a positive move forward, I doubt it's enough to secure wins in the upcoming races."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari needs to improve their performance in order to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren boasted the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
“We need to proceed with caution,” he stated. “Following Monaco, I believe we experienced our four most challenging races of the season, given that Monaco’s unique characteristics suited our car at the time. Similarly, Monza is a track with its own unique and distinct features.
“There were many straight sections and few turns on this track. We brought a rear wing specifically designed for this circuit, which played a key role in our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has closed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I doubt this improvement will make us the leading car at other tracks for the remainder of the season.
"We have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm very pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' championship.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari is only 39 points behind Red Bull.
However, Leclerc has minimized the expectations, pointing to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but the conditions in Baku and Singapore will likely be quite distinct. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, and as demonstrated, there was a significant shift in performance from one weekend to the next."
"We then experienced some of the most challenging races of the season as we attempted to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't face several more tough races ahead, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
