Fernando Alonso Addresses Newey Speculation Amid Aston Martin’s F1 Struggles: A Call for Team Effort Over Individual Genius
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey reveal happening soon
"I don't believe in making excuses," states Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Inside sources from the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's recruitment in the upcoming days.
Newey, who currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the start of next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his future team has intensified lately, while the rumors of him moving to Ferrari have subsided.
"Right now, it's all just speculation, and in my view, it's not the responsibility of just one person to make corrections," Alonso remarked in Monza.
"It revolves around our current situation and our outputs. Recognizing which efforts are moving us forward, which are not, and aiming to make 2025 a more successful year."
Newey's potential to be on board in the upcoming year could position him to guide the development of the 2026 vehicle for a different company, possibly providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made a significant investment in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine tailored to the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso crossed the finish line in 11th place, while his teammate, Lance Stroll, came in 19th.
2025 is anticipated to be a year of growth for Aston Martin as they prepare for a significant push in 2026
"Alonso responded, "There's little within our control. Essentially, we're at the mercy of our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our utmost effort every single race weekend.
"During an inspiring weekend, such as the one I'm experiencing, I'm certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been neck and neck, finishing races within a mere two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or trailing. This particular weekend turned out to be one where I had a slight edge, feeling quite satisfied with the car's performance and pushing myself perhaps even beyond 100%, culminating in an eleventh-place finish.
"Indeed, feeling let down. It's essential to remain patient. It's important to recognize that our main focus is on 2026."
"However, I also believe that as a team, we might come to terms with not contending for the top four positions. Those are elite teams, and they have a significant lead over us."
"Now, finding ourselves trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear we must elevate our standards. Improvements are necessary."
Regarding the upcoming year's vehicle, Alonso mentioned, "I believe there's still an opportunity for us to respond."
"McLaren progressed from being at the bottom to securing a podium position within four months, providing us with concrete instances.
"Furthermore, Mercedes began on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've already secured three wins this year. Thus, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will show any progress in the upcoming races.
"Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, 'Until there's an improvement to the vehicle, this current situation will persist, and frankly, it's insufficient.'"
"Performance fell short in Monza. It was lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"Therefore, I believe there won't be a significant shift in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy moving forward. Everyone on the team is informed about what's happening. They're all giving it their all. So indeed, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured a single point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and that's the challenge we're up against."
