Fast Food and Fast Cars: McLaren’s Piastri and Norris Celebrate Hungarian Grand Prix 1-2 with McDonald’s Feast
McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris enjoy seamless camaraderie with a McDonald's outing
"While we were passing time during the delay, we grabbed some McDonald's. I opted for a Big Mac."
At McLaren, there was no discomfort when Oscar Piastri marked his first Formula 1 win in a unique way – by heading to McDonald's.
Piastri secured his inaugural Formula 1 win during the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, closely followed by Lando Norris.
The Australian secured his first lead under contentious conditions, as Norris had to yield his position to Piastri, a move that came about due to the advantage gained during the second series of pit stops.
Piastri was in the lead until the 48th lap, but then McLaren chose to pit Norris ahead of him to counter Lewis Hamilton's strategy.
Norris's strategic undercut flipped the standing order.
Subsequently, McLaren found themselves in a position where they had to implore Norris to give up his spot, which he ultimately conceded.
Despite their bond appearing to remain strong, Norris marked their first and second-place victory with a visit to McDonald's.
Piastri's festivities were subdued because his travel arrangements were postponed.
Discussing his celebrations after the race, Piastri mentioned to Fox Sports, “Our return flight from Budapest experienced a considerable delay.
"We were on a flight alongside some of the racers. Lando, Alex Albon, and a few more were present. During the pause caused by the delay, we sneakily grabbed some McDonald's. I opted for a Big Mac."
"It was a simple outing, just a few F1 drivers grabbing burgers and chicken nuggets, honestly. On the flight back, we played Monopoly. Everything was fine except for Alex Albon showing us his Monopoly skills.
"I arrived back at my place at 5:00 am, marking the end of the festivities. To put it mildly, the post-event gathering was far from luxurious."
Piastri emphasized the advancements he's achieved in his driving skills over the last year, especially in managing tyre wear.
In the initial stages of the race, Piastri dominated from the front after securing the lead from his starting position of second on the grid.
He shared his thoughts, stating, “Truthfully, I was pleased with the victory and the outcome, but what really filled me with pride was the way I managed to secure that spot from the beginning. My start was solid, and I maintained a robust performance in the race's initial half.
Reflecting on my experience in Hungary the previous year, I must admit that my performance was far from satisfactory due to my handling of the race. Therefore, it filled me with pride to see such a dramatic improvement in just a year. Crossing the finish line in first place this time was an incredible feeling.
