Ex-Merkel Adviser Advocates for Dialogue Over Tariffs in Resolving EU-China EV Dispute
Ex-adviser to Merkel urges China and EU to resolve EV conflict through discussion:
The ex-counsel to the German Chancellor insists on conversation, not punitive tariffs, as the foundation to settle the EU-China disagreement.
Just before the anticipated implementation of new European Union duties on electric vehicles (EVs) produced in China, an ex-economic consultant to Angela Merkel has called on both parties to find a resolution via negotiation and steer clear of "penalizing" actions.
Roller, who served as the chief of economic and financial policy in the German chancellor's office from 2011 to 2022, leans towards diplomacy when it comes to his personal view on the conflict. "I believe the solution to the issue of overcapacity isn't a trade war, but collective strategies where we collaborate and tackle the issue," he expressed during an interview on September 24.
"Our strategy will always focus on communication and problem-solving rather than resorting to escalation, as it will eventually lead to everyone's loss," stated Roller, who is also the initiator and head of Berlin Global Dialogue. "It's crucial to avoid the pitfalls of independence and strive to find mutual understanding, wherever feasible, for everyone's advantage."
Roller remembered during his tenure in the government that there were longstanding worries about China's overcapacity issues, which the G20 had been attempting to tackle through a collective strategy on steel. He also mentioned that China had proposed "some solutions" in the past.
