Di Resta: It Just Wasn't My Weekend
Paul di Resta's hopes for the 2018 championship came to a disappointing close as the Mercedes driver fell short by 22 points to his teammate Gary Paffett in the DTM title race at the Hockenheimring.
The ex-Formula 1 driver entered the last weekend of the year leading the championship by four points, just ahead of his teammate Paffett.
Paul di Resta concluded the 2018 season with a letdown, as the Mercedes driver fell short of winning the DTM championship by 22 points, losing to his teammate Gary Paffett at the Hockenheimring.
The ex-Formula 1 driver entered the final weekend of the year with a four-point lead over his teammate Paffett in the championship standings.
Gary Paffett secured the championship by consistently placing no lower than fourth in the two weekend races. On the other hand, Paul Di Resta fell to third place in the overall rankings, as he only managed to score four points, allowing Audi's Rene Rast to move ahead of him.
Despite feeling let down, Di Resta graciously accepted his loss and offered his congratulations to Paffett for winning the title.
"It was a frustrating way to wrap up the season for me. Being at the top before the last round naturally sets the expectation to end as the champion," Di Resta remarked.
"Regrettably, things didn't go as planned for me. This weekend just wasn't in my favor. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Gary for securing his second DTM championship."
Paul di Resta's third-place finish in the drivers' standings contributed to Mercedes capping off their last season in the DTM on a high note, as the Stuttgart-based manufacturer secured all three available titles.
"Ultimately, our team reached its objective with a Mercedes driver taking the championship. I am extremely grateful to everyone for their dedication throughout the season. Their efforts have truly earned them this triple victory."
