Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes to Nico Hulkenberg After Controversial Monza Collision; Yuki Tsunoda’s Frustration Mounts Following Haas Incident
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident involving Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix due to a collision between them on the first lap.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was competing against Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the pack during the first lap of the Monza race on Sunday when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he felt a collision. This caused Hulkenberg's Haas to be pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, his teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second time penalty due to the incident. However, he subsequently had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at home for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“Overall, we didn't have enough speed today, even without considering the penalties,” he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing early on, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and realized that I believed we had enough space, but I felt the impact, so I didn't leave him sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car was performing well afterwards, and we gave it our all with the resources available. I’ve been aiming to extract the best performance from the car since Friday afternoon until today."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda 'exasperated' after incident
According to team member Laurent Mekies, RB’s performance at the Italian GP was influenced by Hulkenberg. A collision between the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda brought the Japanese driver's race to an early end.
"I'm quite upset; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it looked like he froze up, leading to him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I immediately sensed the issue and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to do well at those tracks. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him crucial time on the updated RB car that was taken to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, which caused us to withdraw the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki retiring is missing out on 40 laps that could have given us better insights into the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial penalty was not implemented properly."
"We have to re-evaluate our processes in light of this situation and take lessons from the error made today. While such incidents do occur, our pit crew has typically performed outstandingly this season."
