Charles Leclerc Warns Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledges that while progress has been made, it is not yet adequate for winning races consistently.
Charles Leclerc has issued a caution, stating that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by using a one-stop strategy to surpass McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, indicating that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference held after the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that time. Similarly, Monza is a very unique and distinctive circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few corners. We equipped a rear wing suited for this track, which contributed to our victory today. We also introduced another upgrade, which I believe has narrowed the gap to McLaren. However, I don't think it will make us the leading car for the rest of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm extremely pleased to have one here in Italy."
Despite facing difficulties since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered hopes, pointing to previous championship speculation that arose after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, as could Singapore. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We managed to do this from Monaco to Montreal, but the transition between those two weekends demonstrated just how significant the differences can be."
"We then endured three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out our car's issues. Hopefully, we won't face several more challenging races ahead, and I don't believe we will."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
