Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance Despite Monza Triumph
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari's latest improvements may fall short in securing victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it sufficient to clinch wins for the rest of the season? Probably not, but we've made significant progress," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari needs to enhance their performance to reliably compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outperforming McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance in terms of speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "remain careful."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco was uniquely suited to our car back then. Monza, too, is a highly unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We used a rear wing specifically designed for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. We also implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"I believe there's still plenty of effort needed, but I'm still quite pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, pointing to similar championship challenge discussions that arose after his Monaco victory.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will also be unique. Therefore, we need to regroup and adjust our approach. We successfully made adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, which, as we've observed, involved significant changes between the two weekends."
"We experienced a few of the toughest races of the season as we attempted to figure out the issues with our car. I am optimistic that we won't face such challenging races in the future, and I don't believe that will happen again."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that's just not realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
