Perplexing Decision: Carlos Sainz Not Chosen by Red Bull or Mercedes

"It's uncommon for a leading team driver to join a team in the middle of the pack."

However, his outstanding display during the qualifying session in Mexico has led to assertions that Sainz deserves a more competitive vehicle for the 2025 season.

Karun Chandhok from Sky Sports mentioned that it is uncommon for a driver from a leading team to join a team that is not at the top.

James Vowles and his team have achieved an impressive feat by bringing him on board, showcasing their outstanding work.

"It's disappointing that he won't be racing for Red Bull or Mercedes next year."

Sainz considered joining Red Bull, Mercedes, and even Aston Martin at one point.

Aston Martin quickly secured a new contract with Fernando Alonso, whereas Red Bull instead expressed continued confidence in Sergio Perez.

Mercedes, after careful consideration, acknowledged their interest in Sainz but ultimately chose Kimi Antonelli as Hamilton's successor.

Carlos Sainz was highly sought after, and Williams successfully fended off competition from Alpine and Sauber to secure his interest

Chandhok stated: "Securing pole position only required two laps."

"In Austin and at this location, he has been performing exceptionally well. Unfortunately, he encountered a fuel issue, which forced him to carefully handle the race in Austin."

"It's bewildering that he won't have a position in one of the top four teams next year."

"The person is performing exceptionally well. It's astonishing."

Danica Patrick commented, "His dedication and concentration on Ferrari to conclude the season in such a manner have been incredibly remarkable."

"He's performed amazingly throughout the year, facing significant challenges in deciding his direction and actions."

"He's performed consistently well throughout the year, and I really hope he secures a victory for his own satisfaction."

When you observe that lap, his hands remain incredibly steady. He skillfully navigates the curves, with the car perfectly in sync with him.

Chandhok responded by saying, "He's consistently demonstrated a fluid driving style. He's also quite thoughtful."

"When he feels the wheels slipping, he shifts into a higher gear and constantly seeks to speed up."

"He's quite intellectual. That lap was executed with exceptional skill."

F1 Drivers’ Briefing Heats Up: Verstappen and Norris Clash as FIA Faces Criticism Over Racing Guidelines

Published

on

By

"Max Verstappen and Lando Norris engage in direct conversations during drivers' meeting; some drivers view this as FIA acknowledging fault."

According to reports, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris engaged in a spirited discussion during a drivers' meeting in Mexico, focusing on the rules of fair defense and overtaking.

A major discussion at this weekend's F1 Mexico City Grand Prix centered on whether Verstappen and Norris adhered to regulations during last week's event in Texas, where the McLaren driver received a penalty from the stewards.

According to a report by Sky Sports' Craig Slater, the topic was addressed face-to-face during the customary drivers' meeting held on a Friday.

According to Slater, the drivers' meeting in Mexico City was animated, with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen engaging in straightforward discussions about defense and overtaking strategies.

"I was informed that they behaved in a 'calm' and 'respectful' manner."

Discussions were primarily centered around the rules of engagement and ways to enhance them. Most drivers agreed that the standards require improvement, and there is a need to intensify the current evaluation efforts.

The meeting began with the drivers inquiring of the FIA about the decision-making process used by the stewards in incidents such as the clash between Verstappen and Norris. Their goal was to gain a clearer understanding of how these decisions are reached.

In an intriguing development, the FIA revealed that it plans to revise the language in the racing guidelines and will forward these updates to the drivers for their feedback.

Some people interpreted this as an acknowledgment that the existing rules have been manipulated due to loopholes. However, most individuals viewed it favorably that the FIA was willing to self-reflect and make necessary adjustments.

A different topic debated was if the stewards are effectively applying all the rules at their disposal in situations similar to the Norris-Verstappen incident.

Several individuals highlighted that the regulation against pushing another driver off the track might still be relevant in these situations. They argued that, despite the current guidelines, drivers should not be allowed to force others off the track.

To put it differently, there is a definite and demonstrable difference between navigating a corner properly and taking a corner with the primary objective of forcing another driver off the track.

In the end, it is acknowledged that the regulations will always have some imperfections. There is a desire to refine the language and clarify the guidelines more effectively.

The FIA states that the guidelines for drivers were created at the drivers' request, developed with input from the sport's governing body, and ultimately approved by the GPDA, the drivers' association. The organization is dedicated to refining these guidelines, which have been updated multiple times in recent seasons.

Alex Wurz, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the stewards, acknowledging the challenging nature of their responsibilities. He emphasized the value of maintaining a strong dialogue to enhance the consistency of decision-making, noting that progress has been made in this area. However, he also pointed out that there is still potential for further enhancement. Wurz emphasized that the aim is not to impose excessive regulations but rather to ensure exciting races. He believes that with a united effort, the guidelines can be improved for the upcoming season.

Charles Leclerc from Ferrari was requested to share his opinion on the ongoing discussion.

Leclerc commented that while he wouldn't delve into specifics about internal discussions, there was a collective desire to enhance the situations observed in Austin, as it seemed there wasn't a unified approach among everyone involved.

The FIA has shown a willingness to engage in dialogue and has acknowledged the need for some changes.

"In the future, we aim to assist them in making more informed decisions and to choose tracks that potentially generate less controversy than the one in Austin."

"If there are gravel traps or curbs in certain corners, it would simplify things for everyone, but that's just how it is."

George Russell addresses concerns over cost cap following another Mercedes accident

"It might be necessary to make sacrifices for the remainder of this season"

George Russell has responded to concerns regarding Mercedes' budget limitations following multiple accidents.

During a practice session for the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, Russell experienced a loss of control with his W15, just a few days following another crash in Texas.

Lewis Hamilton also lost control and spun during the race in the United States last weekend.

Mercedes team principal, Wolff, mentioned to Sky Sports in Mexico that there have been several significant crashes in recent races.

"The frame suffered damage. Although we can fix it, it won't be operational at this location."

"The atmosphere fluctuates between high and low."

He mentioned, "After two significant collisions, the chassis requires repairs before the Brazil event."

"It's challenging…"

Due to damage to the updated floor of his W15, Russell is left with no choice but to use an earlier version.

However, he asserted that the harm done to Mercedes’ components will not push them beyond the $135 million spending limit.

He stated that there are no worries regarding the budget cap, as they always maintain a small buffer. Additionally, he mentioned that they constantly evaluate how much to invest in the current season compared to the next.

"At this point, we might need to sacrifice the remainder of this season. Frankly, I would likely support this approach since we are not in contention for a championship."

"I would be perfectly content remaining on the previous level if it improves our prospects for the upcoming year."

"However, I believe we can fix the floor while we're in Austin. That seems to be the strategy."

"The situation turned out to be better than we first thought, and it is anticipated to be released in Brazil."

Russell will begin the Mexico City Grand Prix in fifth position, while Hamilton will be starting in sixth place.

Wolff commented on the problems with their W15 vehicle, stating, "The car only operates effectively within a very limited range."

"When we raced on a fast track in chilly conditions, we were the fastest. Cold weather suits us well."

"When everything aligns perfectly, we have the ability to be fast during a single lap."

"When the tires get too hot, it dramatically amplifies the problem."

Fernando Alonso’s Secret Red Bull Talks: Inside the Flirtation That Could Have Changed F1 History

Headline-Making Discussions Between Fernando Alonso and Red Bull Uncovered This Year

"During that period, Sergio's contract was still up in the air…

Christian Horner revealed that Fernando Alonso had been exploring options by initiating initial discussions with Red Bull earlier this year.

Throughout the years, the interactions between Alonso and Red Bull have been widely reported. However, it has only recently come to light that they actually got in touch in 2024.

At the start of this season, Red Bull had already signed contracts with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez when Alonso reached out to them.

"At that point, Sergio's contract had not been renewed," Horner clarified.

"As an experienced professional, Fernando consistently seeks to understand all of his available choices."

"He's constantly evaluating the market with his long-time manager or advisor, Flavio Briatore."

"This demonstrates his intense drive and competitive nature. Even at 43, he continues to perform exceptionally."

"He's maintaining excellent physical condition, which proves that age is merely a figure."

"He remains an exceptionally skilled Formula 1 driver, and with the right resources, I have no doubt he would lead the pack."

Alonso chose to sign a fresh contract with Aston Martin, committing himself to the team through the conclusion of 2026.

This implies that the two-time Formula 1 champion could finish his career without ever driving for Red Bull, even though there have been several close opportunities.

Horner discussed the occasions when he nearly signed Alonso.

"He is an exceptionally strong rival. I recall traveling to Madrid after his initial McLaren tenure in 2008 and making efforts to have him join our team," Horner mentioned.

"Our aim was to secure a two-year contract, but he was only willing to agree to a single-year agreement."

"We believed he already had an agreement with Ferrari up his sleeve at that time. As a result, we couldn't reach an agreement."

"If he had joined us back in 2009, the situation might have been somewhat different."

"By the middle of the 2009 season, he firmly believed that if he had the chance to drive our car, he could still secure the championship title that year. That was the decisive moment."

"We later talked… I recall being with him and Adrian Newey in the back of a rental car at Spa Airport."

"It was likely in 2011 or perhaps 2012 when the transition from Ferrari began, and even at the start of this year."

"It's amazing how long his career has lasted, how competitive he is, and the impressive stats that reflect his talent and skills."

"Winning just two world championships doesn't fully reflect his talent. He deserved to have won more."

Christian Horner Defends Red Bull’s Race Engineer Amid Rising Criticism in Mexico: Calls Out ‘Armchair Specialists

Published

By

Red Bull criticizes "armchair experts" for their comments on Sergio Perez's race engineer. Christian Horner stands by Hugh Bird following criticism in Mexico.

Christian Horner has responded to detractors who, armed with only "1% of the facts," have criticized Sergio Perez's race engineer.

The head of Red Bull was informed about the disapproval directed at Hugh Bird in Mexico, which is where this weekend's grand prix is being held, and is also the homeland of Perez.

Since 2021, Bird has served as the race engineer communicating with Perez during competitions, but it appears he is currently under scrutiny from critics in Mexico.

"Listen, as a race engineer communicating with the driver, you're in the spotlight, and in today's digital age, everyone has something to say," Horner replied.

"Each person has their own perspective on matters."

"I believe Hugh performs exceptionally well. He is an incredibly intelligent individual."

"He has matured within the team, consistently putting in his utmost effort to support his driver and the entire team."

"It's quite severe for individuals to make judgments and offer criticism from the outside when they're only aware of roughly 1% of the actual circumstances he's managing."

"The best aspect of making everything accessible in Formula 1 is the level of access we are currently providing."

"The drawback is the influx of self-proclaimed experts and enthusiasts that it attracts."

Hugh Bird is an exceptionally skilled engineer and a crucial member of our group, so I believe that any negative remarks about him are unjust.

The pressure on Perez is set to increase following his disappointing performance in the qualifying round for his home event at the F1 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Perez acknowledged that his performance this season has been "terrible" and ended up qualifying in 18th place.

Helmut Marko grimly informed Sky Germany that, regrettably, the anticipated improvement has not occurred.

Red Bull is considering bringing in Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda as potential replacements if they decide to part ways with Perez.

Carlos Sainz outpaces Max Verstappen to secure the top spot in Mexico City GP qualifying

Carlos Sainz earns his first pole position of the season by surpassing Max Verstappen in the Mexico qualifying round.

Carlos Sainz secured his maiden pole position of the season, outpacing F1 championship frontrunner Max Verstappen at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Ferrari's departing driver, Sainz, secured the pole position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, surpassing Red Bull's Verstappen by 0.225 seconds. Verstappen, currently ahead in the championship by 57 points, had his initial Q3 lap invalidated for exceeding track limits.

Max Verstappen's competitor for the championship, Lando Norris, recorded the third quickest time, trailing the pole position by 0.314 seconds. Historically, starting from the third spot on the grid has been advantageous in Mexico, thanks to the significant slipstream effect on the track's exceptionally long stretch leading to the first turn.

Charles Leclerc ended up in fourth place on the grid, starting from the second row, as he was unable to keep up with the impressive speed of his Ferrari teammate.

Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured the fifth and sixth spots on the grid, occupying the entire third row. Seven-time world champion Hamilton was trailing the fastest time by seven-tenths of a second.

Kevin Magnussen secured the eighth position, finishing ahead of Pierre Gasly from Alpine, Alex Albon driving for Williams, and Nico Hulkenberg, his teammate at Haas, who completed the top ten.

Yuki Tsunoda had an accident at Turn 12 while trying to claim the 11th spot on the starting grid, finishing just ahead of his Red Bull teammate Liam Lawson.

A red flag towards the end stopped other drivers from enhancing their times on their second attempts, resulting in Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finishing in 13th and 14th positions. They were placed just ahead of Sauber's Valtteri Bottas, who unusually advanced to Q2.

Franco Colapinto was unable to advance beyond the first qualifying round and is set to begin the race in 16th position for Williams. He is positioned just ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who unexpectedly exited the session in 17th place.

Sergio Perez is facing increasing pressure after the Mexican driver finished with a time that placed him 18th, resulting in his elimination from the initial stage of qualifying for the fifth time this season.

Perez managed to outpace just two drivers: Esteban Ocon from Alpine and Zhou Guanyu from Sauber.

Brake Troubles Plague Sergio Perez: Mexican GP Qualifying Debacle Explained

Published

on

By

Sergio Perez explains that a braking problem was the cause of his poor performance during the F1 qualifying session in Mexico. He stated, "For the past three races, I've been unable to bring the car to a stop."

Sergio Perez disclosed that a persistent brake problem caused his qualifying mishap during the Mexico City Grand Prix in Formula 1, which took place in his home country.

Perez was eliminated in the first qualifying session as he faced difficulties maintaining speed.

Perez's poor performance streak persists, with the exception of Baku, where he was in contention for a podium finish.

Since the Chinese Grand Prix back in April, Perez has not secured a top-three finish.

While addressing the media in Mexico, with Crash.net reporters on-site in the paddock, Perez detailed how a persistent brake problem is affecting his performance.

"I've been having a lot of trouble with braking," he explained. "Whenever I attempt to brake aggressively, I end up putting excessive force on the tires, which makes it really difficult for me to bring the car to a stop."

"For the past three races, I've been unable to bring the car to a stop as needed. I've had to adjust my braking significantly, which is evident in the data, but so far, we haven't found a solution."

Perez expressed dissatisfaction with how his RB20 was performing in slow corners, mentioning that he was struggling to get the car to turn effectively.

He mentioned, "The problem we're dealing with occurs mostly when moving in a straight line. I can't bring the car to a halt."

"I tend to slip frequently. Since everything depends on surface sensitivity, it becomes much more challenging."

Perez is set to begin the race from the 18th position on the starting grid, aiming to thrill his hometown supporters.

The driver from Mexico admitted that the problem with the brakes will probably affect his performance on Sunday.

He noted that the situation will be more challenging, as it also affects the long stretches. He expressed his intention to explore every option, work closely with the team, and determine what solutions they can come up with.

"It's clearly quite frustrating. This is the grand prix where I genuinely want to perform well. Unfortunately, this race has been quite challenging and complicated."

The driver from Monaco completed a rough final lap during the Q3 session, encountering oversteer issues in the middle section of the lap.

Throughout the weekend's sessions in Mexico, Leclerc has consistently lagged behind Sainz in terms of speed.

In an interview with Sky Sports F1 following the qualifying session, Leclerc provided a candid evaluation of how he performed.

"I felt completely lost," Leclerc stated. "During the second practice session, as soon as I got into the car, I realized I just didn't have the right sensation."

During the third practice session, I didn't perform well, and my performance in the qualifying session was also lacking. Achieving fourth place was the best I could manage.

At the Circuit of the Americas, the situation was much the same, as Leclerc faced challenges during qualifying but delivered his strongest performance during the race.

Charles Leclerc surged to the front during the first lap of the United States Grand Prix, despite beginning the race from fourth position.

He led the race from the beginning and clinched his third victory of the season.

Leclerc expressed a sliver of hope, noting that he believes his race pace was the quickest based on yesterday's performance.

"Based on the race pace observed yesterday, I'm facing a tougher challenge starting from the fourth position. I just wasn't feeling it."

"My driving style tends to make low-grip tracks, like Monza and this one, more challenging, particularly during qualifying. However, things went well for me in the race at Monza."

"I'm quite sure that our speed during the race will be strong tomorrow, but I'll need an excellent start to compete for victory."

Lando Norris Stands Firm on McLaren’s New Floor: ‘Delivering Exactly What the Team Expects’ Despite Qualifying Deficit

Published

By

Lando Norris emphasizes that the new floor is meeting the team's expectations, even though there's a 0.3-second gap. He stated, "If the improvement was two or three-tenths of a second, we would likely be in first place. However, the changes are minor, and probably not as significant as some might assume from the outside."

Lando Norris has affirmed that McLaren's latest floor upgrade is "meeting the team's expectations" even though they were 0.3 seconds slower than Ferrari during the Formula 1 qualifying session for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Norris is set to begin Sunday's race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez from the third position on the starting grid.

During the last practice session, McLaren secured the top two positions, but their performance declined as the qualifying rounds continued.

In their last race in Austin, the team from Woking was thoroughly defeated by Ferrari, prompting McLaren to unveil a new floor update for this weekend's competition.

Despite being approximately three-tenths of a second behind Carlos Sainz, Norris has affirmed that the recent upgrade is functioning as expected.

During the FIA press conference in Mexico, with Crash.net reporting live from the paddock, Norris stated, "No, it is meeting the team's expectations perfectly. It is beneficial. But yes."

"If the upgrade improved our performance by two or three-tenths of a second, achieving first place would be straightforward. However, we're discussing very minor enhancements, and the actual impact is likely much smaller than what outsiders might assume."

"When discussing improvements, people typically refer to gains of one, two, or three-tenths, and sometimes it's even less than that. Indeed."

Norris believes he pushed his McLaren to its fullest potential during qualifying, acknowledging that he was "pushing the boundaries" on his last lap in Q3.

Looking back on the qualifying session, Norris commented, "I was pushing to the maximum; going faster wasn’t possible for me. It seemed that the others just weren't able to fully capitalize on their runs. I was nearly locking up and making errors at almost every corner."

During my lap in Q3, I managed to achieve that, but I certainly didn't have an extra three-tenths of a second to spare. It was more about them speeding up. I had already pushed the car to its maximum potential in Q1 and Q2.

"Initially, it seemed like we were the favorites, but from the first practice session, Ferrari has been the team to watch, with Carlos leading the pack today. It will be tough to surpass them tomorrow."

Norris aims to reduce Max Verstappen's 57-point advantage in the drivers' championship, as the Red Bull driver will begin the race just ahead of him in second position.

Perplexed Performance: Hamilton Questions Mercedes’ Upgraded W15 After Qualifying Struggles in Mexico

Lewis Hamilton was confused about why his newly upgraded Mercedes F1 car did not perform as swiftly during the qualifying round as he had anticipated.

Lewis Hamilton was confused about why the improved Mercedes F1 vehicle wasn't faster after his teammate, George Russell, outperformed him in qualifying at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

At the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez this weekend, Mercedes is trying out different setups. Hamilton is driving the newest upgraded W15 model, whereas Russell is using an older version.

In the most recent qualifying session, Hamilton was outpaced by Russell, as Mercedes secured both fifth and sixth positions on the grid. The seven-time world champion finished three-tenths of a second behind his teammate and was seven-tenths slower than the fastest time.

Hamilton expressed that the performance in P3 was satisfactory and seemed to indicate they were progressing well. He chose not to alter anything.

"We simply attached the wing and I thought, 'Alright, let's keep it as it is.' We didn't have many options to improve the car's setup. The car's performance is at its current level."

"We moved into the qualifying rounds and suddenly I had no grip at the back of the car. It felt completely reversed. The car behaves in a very peculiar way. I'm curious to analyze the data since I'm driving the upgraded model, which is supposed to be faster. However, I don't believe it is."

During his last lap in the Q3 session, Hamilton experienced a sideways slide, highlighting the challenges of maneuvering the W15.

Mercedes has experienced a series of crashes lately, as Russell's incident during Friday's practice marked the fourth crash in as many days of track activity.

This incident occurred following his accident during the qualifying rounds of the United States Grand Prix, just one day prior to Hamilton losing control and spinning on the second lap of the Austin race.

When questioned about the reasons behind the ongoing issues with Mercedes' car affecting both drivers, Hamilton responded: "Honestly, not much. The car is experiencing three-wheeling, and the ride height fluctuates by 15mm. When this happens, it essentially causes everything to fail."

After failing to finish in his previous race at the Circuit of the Americas, Hamilton is not anticipating much success in the upcoming grand prix on Sunday.

"We're expecting to receive a significant amount of data tomorrow, but I doubt we'll be able to match the performance of those in front of us," he stated. "They have a considerable lead over us."

"Let's observe how everything unfolds. My main goal is to simply finish the race this time around."

George Russell’s Resilience: Navigating Setbacks with ‘Miami-Spec’ Floor Amid Mercedes Challenges

Title: George Russell Compelled to Use Older Floor Design Due to Avoidable Accidents

Body: George Russell disclosed that the floor currently installed on his Mercedes Formula 1 vehicle is the same one that was previously utilized during the Miami race.

George Russell disclosed that due to a series of "quite unnecessary" crashes, he has had to use a floor for his car that was last utilized during the Miami race.

Russell has been involved in two significant crashes over the course of two races, which has resulted in him missing out on Mercedes' latest

Because of a lack of components, the British racer is using a floor design specific to the Miami race.

Despite this, he was still able to easily qualify ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who is using the latest upgrade.

The driver, who has claimed the world championship title seven times, expressed confusion about the new package's performance, saying: "I'm curious to analyze the results because I'm driving the upgraded car, which is supposed to be faster. However, it doesn't seem to be."

Following the qualifying session in Mexico, where Crash.net is on-site in the paddock, Russell confessed that securing P5 was the maximum achievable since his car is equipped with older components.

"We're still trying to figure out why FP1 went so well," he mentioned.

"Today turned out to be an excellent day. Starting from P3 on a track we competed on in Miami around 14 races ago, I believe we maximized our potential."

During the second practice session, Russell's Mercedes spun out of control at Turn 8, causing the session to be delayed for an extended period.

The Formula 1 driver, who has won two grand prix races, firmly stated that his recent series of accidents aren't due to "over-driving." Instead, he attributed them to the fact that "the car is unpredictable."

Thinking back to his accident on Friday, he said, "We fully understand what occurred. When you observe the Red Bulls, they glide over the kerb effortlessly."

"For the past two years, I've consistently driven over that curb on each lap. During the first practice session, I completed four laps with no issues while using the curb. But then, unexpectedly, as you saw in the replay, I hit it and it felt like I was bouncing like a kangaroo."

"It was truly disheartening. Over the past fortnight, I've placed a considerable amount of strain on the team due to a shortage of spare parts. This situation was avoidable, yet the cause remains unclear. It's not a result of aggressive driving; the car just suddenly reacts."
